U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Geologist in Louisville, Kentucky

Summary About the Position: Serves as a member of the Geotechnical & Dam Safety Section for a wide variety of civil projects with primary responsibility for District Flood Control, Seismic and Navigation Projects. May serve as Team Leader for specific projects. Depending on military workload, may serve as specialist or senior engineering geologist with respect to investigation and design of embankments, pavements, and structural foundations for Military Projects. Responsibilities Serve as a senior geologist with respect to investigation and design of embankments, pavements, and structural foundations for Civil Works Projects. Conduct and direct design studies and computations of features concerning principles of geotechnical engineering. Use extensive knowledge of engineering geology, seismology, good engineering practice, basic economics, and geotechnical experience to optimize safety, practicability, constructability, and economy in design. Provide technical assistance and oversees the work of junior engineers and geologist. Develop detailed scope and cost estimate for multifaceted projects. Plan and carry out geotechnical investigations for projects. Perform site visits to ensure construction adheres to the design intent and resolves construction related issues. Direct the preparation of inspection/investigation reports, design documents, detailed construction drawings, and technical specifications for projects. Utilize computer software and applications necessary for the completion of the project and properly integrates other mathematical and graphical methods. Lead execution of division-wide programs including the Dam Safety Program, Levee Safety program, District Quality Control Reviews, and Agency Technical Review. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Individual Occupational Requirement for Geologist (1350) series: A. Degree: A bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A. above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience and must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for clearly indicating the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions.) In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: GS-12 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience serving as a Geologist engaged in the independent performance of investigations and evaluations of geological aspects of civil works project design, construction, operation and maintenance which includes analyzing and interpreting soil and rock data from laboratory and field tests, instrumentation, logs of borings and data secured by reconnaissance of project area; assisting lower-grade engineers and geologists in the development of foundation reports, design memorandum, design analysis, survey reports and embankment reports; independently planning and implementing geologic investigations for projects; and preparing intensively detailed investigation reports, design documents, construction drawings, and technical specifications for projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Data Analysis Geology Oral Communication Technical Competence Writing Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
