Grade 17 (Salary)Position Description:The University of Louisville is seeking an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as the inaugural Associate Vice Provost of Research Computing. UofL recently announced a major new investment in research computing, and we are seeking a leader who will rapidly advance our capabilities in this area. This position offers the opportunity to hit the ground running and help us manage an initial investment of $3.5M in new equipment funding.Reporting the University CIO and with a dotted line to the Vice President of Research, the new AVP will be ideally positioned to bring together our computationally driven research efforts with the hardware and software systems needed to accelerate discovery across the University.The University is a premiere very-high research activity institution, combined with a very strong focus on supporting social mobility and community engagement. With a generous benefit package, we are a great place to live and work.The RoleThe AVP of Research Computing provides strategic leadership for the ITS Research Computing department. The AVP guides university-wide efforts to develop, implement, and maintain an agile, sustainable strategic plan and support a framework for research computing aligned with the needs of the University’s growing research enterprise. In collaboration with campus stakeholders, the AVP determines needs, establishes priorities, and allocates University resources in research computing, data, and security infrastructure and personnel to meet the evolving needs of campus researchers and educators.Additional responsibilities include:Serve as a bridge between the technical and scientific worlds, helping faculty researchers engage with computationally oriented research, help develop sustained research plans, and facilitate ITS support for these research activities.Build relationships and partnerships with the Deans, particularly those with highly computationally oriented research portfolios, to ensure that ITS is meeting the needs of the researchers in these areas.Build and sustain state and regional partnerships that facilitate the growth of research computation for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the region.Develop and maintain a robust, financially sustainable research computing infrastructure and wrap-around services in support of existing and emerging research areas.Act as a point of contact for our faculty on research computing, including research and academic infrastructure support for grants and contracts. Proactively market compute capabilities and provide educational outreach to inform faculty of opportunities to integrate high performance computing into research programs.Form strategic partnerships (internal and external), pursue external funding opportunities (NIH, NSF, DOE, industry, etc.), and serve as an investigator on grants of strategic importance.Direct projects in high-performance computing, research data storage, research databases, research networking, research computing facilities, and related areas to support the needs of the university community.Direct Research Computing’s strategic planning, budget planning, and capital planning processes, ensuring alignment with the university’s strategic objectives.Work with university leadership to develop research data governance policies and best practices.Provide support for ITS administration on special projects and new initiatives.Represent the ITS unit on university-wide planning teams, committees, and partnerships.
