VMware Senior Technical Program Manager for Tanzu Developer Application Platform - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Los Angeles, California

The VMware Modern Application Platform Business Unit (MAPBU) is looking for a Senior Technical Program Manager to join us in building the Tanzu portfolio that transforms how the world builds, deploys, and scales software. This role will work across the engineering teams to be the ‘glue’ that facilitates the flow of features to our customers while keeping our quality bar high and fostering continuous improvement.

This role is specifically focused on the VMware Tanzu’s Developer Application Platform, one of our most strategic and fastest-growing franchises. You will work with programs to build and deliver key capabilities for the Tanzu Application Platform, and will specifically enable the organization to observe progress and friction in the delivery flow of our highest-priority customer outcomes. You will foster a culture of continuous improvement in our processes and practices so that we can deliver products that can run and operate at scale, making a meaningful and measurable impact on our customers’ success.

  • You love helping individuals, teams, and programs reach their full potential. Communication, group dynamics, decision making, systems thinking, and coaching are your passions. You have an insatiable appetite for learning new things and continuously improving organizations.

  • When it comes to the many sources of data that product engineering teams care about and produce (customer adoption, project management, progress toward OKRs, etc.), you see the forest for the trees and can bring the big picture view to life for others via tools like PowerBI, Tableau, or Jira Portfolio.

  • You are capable of understanding distributed systems and how they work and are adept at partnering with engineering teams to set technical direction, vision, and strategy.

  • You’re able to keep short-term, tactical details of a product release in focus, clearly visible to teams and stakeholders, and under control. At the same time, you’re working towards the long-term goal of building a sustainable software development and operational system that will scale for years to come.

  • You build mechanisms that allow programs to observe and understand their progress towards near and long term goals and illuminate paths to get there. You enable programs to connect those goals to overall Business Unit and VMware objectives, maintaining alignment within the overall roadmap.

Desired Skills / Experience:

  • Experience delivering releases across multiple complex programs, in which several product teams are building product features and managing dependencies with other programs and products within a large portfolio.

  • Familiarity and experience with agile software delivery methodologies, lean governance, and systems thinking.

  • Experience building visualizations that bring together multiple heterogeneous sources of data to present a clear ‘big picture’ view to teams and stakeholders. Extensive experience with data visualization, business intelligence, and/or administering agile project or portfolio management tools is a big plus.

  • Proven ability to work independently to creatively solve ambiguous problems and manage scope and risk/opportunities and dependencies.

  • Ability to define, establish, and maintain consistent, traceable decision-making processes across a diverse landscape of stakeholders.

  • Experience facilitating planning and coordination efforts with Go-To-Market, Sales, and other customer-facing teams who partner with R&D to support their schedules and planning, tracking, and communication of product delivery expectations with potential and existing customers.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand technical concepts at a level equivalent to Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience in related fields.

Success in your first twelve months here at VMware looks like:

  • You have become deeply familiar with our product suite and can synthesize product and engineering information into new, creative solutions and proactive risk mitigation.

  • You have provided and are maintaining a unified, observable view of progress, blockers, and risk across several related product releases.

  • You have worked with various programs to produce high-quality work, establish product release plans, maintain the appropriate channels for open communication within the program as well as external dependencies, manage timelines, identify and resolve technical gaps, and coach team members to develop and understand the ‘why’ behind supportive lean / agile capabilities.

  • You have enabled the improvement of several key software delivery practices / processes and shortened cycle times around organizational learning.

Remote work will be considered for strong candidates that can work independently and fully support programs from their location during Pacific Time Zone or Eastern Time Zone hours. Some travel to VMware locations will be encouraged when it is safe to do so.

This job may require the candidate to comply with travel restrictions and/or work from a facility that requires full vaccination prior to entry. Further, depending on various factors, including legal challenges to the Executive Order on Ensuring Adequate COVID Safety Protocols for Federal Contractors, VMware may require employees to be fully vaccinated effective January 18, 2022.
