Overview

Purpose Statement/Position Summary:

The Division of Psychiatry is seeking to hire a full-time Pediatric Psychologist to join the Inpatient Consultation/Liaison (C/L) Psychiatry Service at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). The C/L multidisciplinary team is comprised of Pediatric Psychologists, Psychiatric Social Workers, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists.

The C/L Team provides multidisciplinary mental health assessments, treatment interventions and recommendations. The primary duties include:

• Provide consultation to primary medical team, consultant teams, and allied health professionals on matters relating to mental health, pediatric psychology and behavioral medicine.

• Provides acute assessment of coping/adjustment to acute and chronic medical conditions admitted to CHLA; provides brief bedside psychometric testing, and practical recommendations to the primary team.

• Provide brief-focused interventions and inpatient psychotherapy to patients and families. Focus on supporting goals of hospitalization, coping and adjustment to illness, transition to home/school.

• Develop and implement behavioral treatment plans if helpful (including non-medication-based agitation plan); follow-up and monitor for efficacy, assist frontline staff with implementation.

Provide behavioral/psychotherapeutic treatment for conditions including anxiety, depression, trauma exposure. Coordinates with Psychiatric social workers and other behavioral health experts providing care.

• Provide support to primary teams addressing challenging patient behaviors.

Collaborates with the C/L multidisciplinary team to assess safety and provide psychologic care for patients boarding psychiatrically at the hospital. May include care to address and modify risk factors to safely discharge to home, such as safety planning, family meeting and collaboration with outpatient clinicians.

• Evaluates medically unexplained symptoms, in particular assessing for somatization and development of Functional Disorders. Assist with diagnosis, multidisciplinary assessment and informing meeting and behavioral/treatment strategies which can be utilized to support return to function.

• Specific evaluation to assess appropriateness for FND inpatient rehabilitation, for FND not responsive to usual interventions. Identify appropriate psychotherapy approach to be utilized, coordinate care with allied health professionals providing physical, occupation or speech therapy.

• Support eating disorder psychology as needed for new diagnoses, as well as follow-up care for patients admitted for medical stabilization of malnutrition or other sequelae related to their eating disorder.

• Provides direct supervision and education of psychology practicum, internship, and fellowship trainees, and indirect supervision/consultation with medical students, psychiatry residents and fellows.

• Conducts staff training on the management and treatment of behavioral health conditions.

• Participate in program development, implementation, and evaluation including opportunities for participation in hospital wide quality improvement committees.

Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience: Supervised professional experience providing therapy to a pediatric psychology population is required. Previous consultation and liaison experience within a medical setting is strongly preferred. Knowledge of the various psychosocial aspects of commonly referred medical conditions is strongly preferred. Experience supervising trainees is preferred. Training in Managing and Adapting Practices (MAP) is strongly

preferred. Experience conducting psychological and developmental assessments is preferred. Prefer bilingual competence (Spanish/English).

Education/Licensure/Certification: Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D., in School, Counseling, or Clinical Psychology; prefer education from an APA-accredited program. License in psychology in California. BLS Certification required.

Pay Scale Information

$94,224.00-$169,728.00

Final determination of a successful candidate’s starting pay will vary based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to education and experience within the job or the industry. The pay scale listed for this position is generally for candidates that meet the specified qualifications and requirements listed on this specific job description. Additional pay may be determined for those candidates that exceed these specified qualifications and requirements.
