UCLA Health Laboratory Assistant in Los Angeles, California


The Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior is seeking

to hire a full-time Laboratory Assistant. You will assist in the performance of

behavioral and electrophysiological experiments. Primary duties include:

  • Training of laboratory animals in sophisticated behavioral/cognitive tasks

  • Assist and perform electrophysiological and behavioral experiments

  • Participate and perform data analysis, creation of figures and writing of manuscripts for publication

  • Maintain lab equipment including annual performance checks, reinstating warrantees, troubleshooting basic problems and performing simple maintenance task/basic repair

  • Ensure a laboratory notebook is maintained that accurately reflects performance of experiments and data analysis for review by regulatory bodies as required

  • Coordinate with laboratory personnel (graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, technicians) for performance of experiments

  • Assist PI in preparing and organizing data for presentations, grant applications and progress reports as needed

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • BS in Neuroscience or Biology or Related Field is preferred

  • Experience working with laboratory animals and in a laboratory environment, including adherence to all public health, state and local policy regulations and animal protocols

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment and supplies.

  • Knowledge of UCLA Environmental Health & Safety guidelines

  • Knowledge of PHS, ARC and DLAM regulatory procedures

  • Good communication skills and ability to work well with multiple individuals at different skill levels

  • Ability to maintain an organized working area

  • Ability to keep accurate and organized records

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures for handling biohazard and chemical waste

  • Excellent attention to detail, for accurate data collection, entry and analysis

  • Excellence in work practices

  • Ability to work independently or as a team member

  • Resourcefulness, willingness to seek out assistance as needed and troubleshoot experimental issues as needed

  • Experience with Matlab is ideal
