    Position description

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is seeking an outstanding MD/PhD or PhD (or equivalent) to serve as Director of Clinical Bioinformatics. The appointment would be at the level of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor.

The ideal candidate will lead all clinical informatics efforts at UCLA’s Advanced Molecular Diagnostics Service, including managing a nimble team of bioinformatics engineers and variant scientists. The primary responsibility of this team is to operate, debug, and improve the mostly automated workflow from raw next-generation sequencing (NGS) data to clinical reports. Current NGS assays include targeted DNA/RNA panels for solid tumors and hematologic malignancies, and exome sequencing of trios for the diagnosis of rare constitutional disorders. Tools in use include Illumina NovaSeq 6000, MiSeqDx, Illumina Dragen, Archer Analysis Server, GoldenHelix VarSeq, DNAnexus, Azure Blobs, and EPIC Beaker. The candidate will be responsible for staying up to date on the latest bioinformatics tools and working with vendors to replace or complement the current suite. In addition, the candidate will serve as the point of contact for informatics issues within the molecular services and be the primary liaison with UCLA Health IT. The candidate will work closely with the Director of Advanced Molecular Diagnostics to expand current capabilities to support clinical care and advance translational research. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with the UCLA research community to facilitate data access and data access strategies for groups with appropriate approvals.

This position is based on the UCLA campus in Westwood.

The successful candidate is required to have Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or equivalent preparation and a demonstrated ability to manage bioinformatics teams, provide technical leadership, and perform translational research. The candidate is expected to have a proven track record as demonstrated by highly cited publications and impactful tools, products, or data sets used by the scientific community. The candidate must have at least seven (7) years relevant experience in positions of increasing responsibility, along with effective written and verbal communication skills.
