Los Alamos National Laboratory Transportation Specialist 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The primary function of this position consists of coordinating, scheduling, and transporting of nuclear and/or hazardous material throughout the Los Alamos National Laboratory and off-site. In addition to transportation, candidate must follow procedures and transportation documents related to nuclear and/or hazardous material packaging and transportation programs. Candidate must work in compliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Energy (DOE), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) and LANL Transportation Safety Document (TSD) requirements.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Must have demonstrated performance in accomplishing work safely, securely, being environmental conscience with due regard for quality.
Working knowledge of 49 CFR DOT and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).
Must follow procedures affecting nuclear and/or hazardous material transportation.
Must be able to work under limited direction and as a team member under tight deadlines.
Must have demonstrated good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Must be able to plan, schedule and arrange activities to accomplish organizational objectives.
Training/Certifications:
Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with hazardous materials endorsement.
Must successfully complete the 49 CFR Hazardous Material Packaging and Transportation (HMPT) training and pass the testing requirements to be qualified and authorized to perform the Transportation Specialist 2 job functions.
Ability to attain a DOE Q-Clearance. Ability to become LANL Human Reliability Program (HRP) certified.
Education/Experience: Position requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Knowledge and experience in hazardous materials and/or nuclear materials packaging and transportation,
Knowledge of federal, state, and local hazardous materials standards and regulations.
Knowledge of Laboratory organizational structure.
Thorough knowledge of implementing the material control and accountability program (depending on job assignment).
Knowledge of Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy/practice/procedures.
Basic knowledge in safety basis and implementation of the LANL Transportation Safety Document (TSD) and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs)when transporting nuclear materials not in compliance with DOT regulations.
Demonstrated cohesiveness with management, supervision, co-workers, and customers.
Some knowledge of writing procedures and document control process.
Working knowledge of load tie-down procedures.
Knowledge of integrated safety and security programs.
Working knowledge of the Laboratory's conduct of maintenance, conduct of engineering, conduct of operations, and quality assurance programs.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, ยง712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
