Los Alamos National Laboratory Synthetic Chemist Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Multiple positions are available (starting immediately) for highly talented and motivated postdoctoral researchers with rigorous backgrounds in synthetic chemistry. In particular, significant experience with nanomaterials or organic-inorganic hybrid materials (e.g., metal- and covalent- organic frameworks, MOFs and COFs) synthesis are particulary sought. A key aim of the research will be development, synthesis, characterization and device integration of a these classes of materials targeting emergent photonic, magnetic and/or quantum properties with atomic precision, taking advantage of the interplay between chemistry, structure and function. The selected postdocs will have the opportunity to engage with a dynamic, multidisciplinary experimental and theoretical research team that bridges fundamental science with application and results-oriented device development and integration. The postdocs will have access to a suite of existing synthesis, integration, and characterization tools (e.g., infrastructure for air-sensitive handling protocol, automated reactor system, thin-film fabrication tools). They would be able to access a suite of fabrication tools and expertise, as well as X-ray and neutron scattering, electron microscopy and single-nanostructure optical spectroscopy/imaging, via the strongly collaborative environment in which they will work, including other postdoctoral researchers, research technologists and scientific staff.

What You Need

  • Strong synthesis experience with organometallic, organic and inorganic synthesis

  • Chemical synthesis skills using air-sensitive handling techniques

  • Experience with a range of optical and structural characterization techniques

  • Strong chemical intuition and creativity

  • Strong background in chemical synthesis method development

  • A strong publication record

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a team

  • Ability to work productively on multiple projects

Education: Ph.D. in inorganic, organic or materials chemistry or related field completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Synthesis and postsynthetic modification of metal- and covalent-organic frameworks

  • Organometallic complexes synthesis

  • Development of thin films of organic/inorganic hybrid materials

  • Experience with crystal growth and X-ray crystallography

  • Advanced optical and structural characterization techniques

  • Planning and execution of complex, multistep reactions

  • Excellent communication and writing skills
