Los Alamos National Laboratory Pulsed Power Engineered Systems Tec 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 2/Tec 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The DARHT Engineering, Operations, and Physics Group (J-6) is seeking two (2) Engineered Systems Tecs to join the Pulsed Power Team. J-6 provides state-of-the-art accelerator, pulsed power, beam-target, and radiographic physics capabilities in support of LANL's hydrodynamic test mission. Core responsibilities of the Pulsed Power Team include: (a) troubleshooting, maintaining, and upgrading of the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) accelerator pulsed power systems, and (b) designing, modeling, developing, and implementing new pulsed power sources and systems related to accelerator applications.

Pulsed Power Engineered Systems Tec 2 ($51,200 - $78,700)

As a pulsed power Eng Sys Tec 2, you will assist in the maintenance of pulsed power systems and subsystems at DARHT and associated test stands, to include testing and troubleshooting. This will require:

  • The ability to execute basic maintenance or new equipment installations with verbal and/or written instructions

  • Working on electrical circuits and high-voltage components

  • Being able to read and understand electrical schematics

  • Experience using tools to work on mechanical systems

  • Experience with power supplies, oscilloscopes, and digitizers

  • The capability to work in a team environment

  • A willingness to acquire new skills and step out of your comfort zone

  • Being a fast learner

Pulsed Power Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($56,300 - $87,200)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, this level requires

  • An application of pulsed power knowledge, LANL policies and principles, and a thorough understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts related to pulsed power.

  • A demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair problems on electro-mechanical systems of moderate complexity using standard diagnostic equipment, while referencing to OEM provided drawings, diagrams, specifications, schematics, and manuals.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with mechanical, electro-mechanical and/or vacuum systems and processes.

  • Experience working to a set of defined requirements and regulations.

  • Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and/or equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team under both general and/or specific instruction.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated apprentice type skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and/or equipment.

  • Proficiency with mechanical, electro-mechanical and/or vacuum systems and processes.

  • Proven experience working to a set of defined requirements and regulations.

Education/Experience for Tec 2: Position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience for Tec 3: Position require an Associate Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with high voltage equipment.

  • Experience working on pulsed power systems.

  • Experience in reading electrical and mechanical drawings.

  • Strong computer skills, including word-processing, spreadsheets, and data acquisition and plotting.

  • DOE Q clearance

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
