Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Postdoctoral Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

A position is available (starting immediately) for a highly talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to engage in a multidisciplinary experimental/theoretical research environment with the goal of advancing materials chemistry and device integration of solution processable nanomaterials for future on-chip integrated photonics. The successful candidate will primarily carry out three-dimensional (3D) monolithic integration of solution-processed semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with polymeric nanostructures fabricated by additive manufacturing, including co-assembly, templated assembly and direct compositing. The work would benefit from advancing photoresin chemistry for optimized structure control and nanoparticle compatibility. The research will be conducted in the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT), a Nanoscale Science Research Center and User Facility operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science by Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories. The nanomaterial and integration development will be conducted using state-of-the-art chemical synthesis, characterization, and nanofabrication facilities at CINT, and will be simultaneously guided by theory and modeling through a co-design approach. The goals of this effort are to realize controlled QD ensemble and hybrid-materials assembly with atomic precision, to facilitate investigation of cooperative effects and cavity-enhanced functionality, and to realize on-chip nanoscale photonic components and devices for ultra-efficient light generation, manipulation and detection. The selected candidate will work both independently and collaboratively with LANL scientists and other members of our interdisciplinary, multi-institutional team. They will be expected to publish in high-impact journals and to present outcomes at major conferences.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A PhD degree in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, physics or a related STEM field, completed within the last five years, or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

  • Expertise in materials chemistry and processing of colloidal nanomaterials, especially QDs, and ideally including integration with polymers for device applications.

  • Expertise in structural, chemical, and/or optical characterization.

  • Demonstrated record of scientific achievement through publications.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated by publications, research proposals, and technical presentations.

  • Ability to conduct research both independently and collaboratively.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise in polymer resin chemistry development, especially photoresins and incorporation of nanoparticles into resins.

  • Experience in 3D printing via two-photon polymerization lithography.

  • Experience in micro- and nano-fabrication processes, tools, and metrology.

  • Experience in modeling photonic systems using FDTD and/or finite element methods.

  • Familiarity with physics of photonic devices (e.g., waveguides, detectors, lasers, etc.)

  • Familiarity with nanoplasmonics and light-matter interactions.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. The starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500.
