Los Alamos National Laboratory Postdoctoral Research Associate in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The ELECTROMAGNETIC SCIENCES & COGNITIVE SPACE APPLICATIONS (ISR-2) in Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a postdoc to join its lightning physics and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) project to support its radio frequency lightning research and national security-related EMP study. The postdoc candidate is expected to process and analyze LANL's 3D broadband interferometric mapping and polarization (BIMAP-3D) lightning observations to advance the understandings of lightning physics, and to apply the understandings on relevant national security fields. In addition to 3D lightning source mapping, the candidate is expected to focus on the RF polarization characteristics and the related physis for various lightning processes. Specifically, the postdoc is expected to:

  • Develop 3D mapping and polarization algorithms based on LANL's new three-station BIMAP-3D observations

  • Analyze 3D mapping and polarization results for improved understanding of lightning discharge physics

  • Apply the lightning RF understandings on national security-related topics

  • Report technical and scientific results in conferences and peer-reviewed journals.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A recent Ph.D. recipient in physics or electrical engineering.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Outstanding physics background in electrodynamics;

  • Advanced computer programming skills in support of scientific data analysis;

  • RF techniques used in lightning RF and EMP observations;

  • Willing and able to learn new scientific and technical subjects;

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and

  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500. Additional Details:

Clearance desired: a security clearance is desired, especially after the 1st year, for national security-related research. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
