Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations Specialist 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at the Operations Specialist 2. This position is full-time onsite.

The Weapons Facility Operations (WFO) Division is seeking an Operations Specialist to join our dynamic team. WFO is responsible for facilitating mission execution at DARHT (Accelerator Facility), the High Explosives (HE) Sciences, Firing and Detonator Facilities and at the Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility (WETF).

The selected candidate will report to the WFO Operations Support Group Leader, and work directly with the Division Office, playing a pivotal role in achieving our strategic goals and maintaining our high standards of performance. This individual will be responsible for a multitude of tasks, including participating in project management activities such as planning, executing, and completing various initiatives to ensure on-time and within-scope delivery. They will craft clear and comprehensive technical documentation and perform editing to support our projects and operations. Additionally, the candidate will streamline day-to-day operations to enhance efficiency and productivity. They will identify opportunities for optimization and implement innovative solutions to drive continuous improvement in process development and improvement.

Specifically, the Operations Specialist 2 will:

  • Provide customer service to internal customers and external customers.

  • Provide direct support of operations in programs, facilities, or organizations that have an operational or process-based deliverable.

  • Ensure that the process is followed through to completion with efficiency, accuracy, and with high quality, while understanding and maintaining priorities.

  • Assist with and coordinate the review and revision of procedures, scope, and process development and improvement pertaining to organizational or facility operations.

  • Provide issues management support for a diverse range of complex issues where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors, including the compilation, review, and assessment of data and the development of management assessments and/or recommendations.

  • Contribute to the organization's goals and objectives.

  • Work under limited direction; receive general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

What You Need

Minimum Requirements for Operations Specialist 2:

Communication:

  • Strong interpersonal, written, verbal communication, and listening skills with demonstrated attention to detail.

Professionalism and Customer Service:

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills providing excellent and professional customer service to individuals at all levels.

  • Exceptional customer service, organizational skills, and ability to interact with all levels of personnel internal and external to the Laboratory.

Business Systems:

  • Experience in basic operations support functions, including technical writing, document control, records management, assessments, and metrics.

  • Advanced knowledge of Laboratory policies and requirements, work hazards, and safety practices, with experience in Microsoft Office and other standardized data entry software.

  • Personal Leadership:

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and interact professionally with team members, other organizations, and customers.

  • Experience making independent decisions and researching, analyzing, and resolving problems both independently and as a team member.

Problem Solving:

  • Proficient in project management principles and process improvement techniques with the ability to develop scope, and schedules.

Education/Experience for Operations Support Specialist 2: Position requires an associate degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 4 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Requirements for Operations Specialist 2:

Technical Acumen and Systems Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated experience with specialized facility management or operational systems, particularly within high-security or high-sensitivity environments. Familiarity with systems such as access control, environmental monitoring, or safety management systems is highly desirable.

Process Optimization Experience:

  • Proven track record of identifying, designing, and implementing process improvements in a complex operational setting. Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, causal analysis or other process optimization methodologies is a strong plus.

Analytical and Reporting Skills:

  • Strong analytical abilities with experience in data interpretation and reporting. Proficiency in creating detailed reports, dashboards, and presentations for senior management, demonstrating the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
