Los Alamos National Laboratory Mechanical Design Engineering Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT) is seeking an R&D Manager 3 (Deputy Group Leader) for the Mechanical Design Engineering (MDE) group. The AOT-MDE Deputy Group Leader will serve as part of the AOT management team to provide leadership for the Division.

AOT maintains, operates, and upgrades all accelerator systems used at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) complex. These consist of two 750-keV Cockcroft-Walton based injector systems (H+ and H- systems), a 201.25-MHz drift tube linear accelerator utilizing high-power diacrode tubes, an 805-MHz coupled cavity linac utilizing klystrons as the primary power source, a proton storage ring, and roughly a kilometer of beam transport lines that feed beam to the 5 independent research programs. The MDE group is made up engineers, designers, and technicians focused on accelerator related technologies and is principally responsible for all the LANSCE mechanical beam line systems including beam line electro-magnets, beam line alignment, beam line assembly, beam line vacuum systems, accelerating structure water cooling systems, and mechanical beam diagnostic systems.

The successful candidate will assist the Group Leader in providing strong technical and managerial leadership to the AOT-MDE Group. Furthermore, the Deputy Group Leader is expected to nurture and develop technical and professional excellence within the group and to work with group members to develop skills that contribute to their professional development. The position will entail solving problems (technical, fiscal, project, managerial), performing analyses needed to generate solutions, and interacting with all levels of personnel both internal and external to the Group, Division and Laboratory. Work time will be split roughly equally between management and actual technical work.
