Los Alamos National Laboratory Health Physicist 2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position is for a Health Physicist 2 who will be part of the Procedures Team within the Radiation Protection Programs Group (RP-PROG). As a Health Physicist 2, you will:

  • Serve in a supporting role representing the RP-PROG Procedures team in the development, revision, and implementation of Radiation Protection procedures, policies, and technical basis documents within the Radiation Protection Division;

  • Ensure that radiation protection principles are incorporated into policies and procedures in order to protect workers, the public, and the environment;

  • Provide radiological technical support to field Health Physics personnel and other LANL customers;

  • Independently assess risk and vulnerabilities within the Radiation Protection Program and identify solutions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience in procedural development to include policy documents and radiation protection instrumentation;

  • Knowledge of health physics principles and theories, and their operational application;

  • Experience in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection;

  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate fundamental elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel;

  • E xcellent written and verbal communication skills;

  • Working knowledge of legal requirements and regulations affecting radiological safety/protection.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Physical Science, and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in the delivery of formal radiation protection training

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF software products

  • Working knowledge of Health Physics in plutonium and accelerator facilities

  • MS in Health Physics, Radiation Protection or related field

  • ABHP certification or progress towards an ABHP certification

Essential Job Functions: Reading vision; Ability to speak; Ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 htz).

Work Environment: Use of protective clothing, including safety glasses and radiological anti-contamination clothing.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is1 year.
