Los Alamos National Laboratory Fire Protection System Services Group Leader in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join the innovative, effective, and customer-focused Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in support of activities that defend our nation. The Engineering Services - Fire Protection Systems (ES-FPS) Group provides fire protection and prevention services to minimize fire-related risks that enable the Laboratory's national security mission. As the ES-FPS Group Leader (GL), you will work closely with the Deputy Division Leader, the Fire Marshal, Facility Operations Director, Los Alamos Site Office and Triad Leadership. You will work with a team of engineering professionals responsible primarily for facility oversight, supporting of daily operations, and reviewing of LANL construction projects to ensure compliance with LANL and nationally recognized codes and standards related to fire alarms/systems.

As the Fire Protection System Services Group Leader, you will:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of LANL's fire alarm systems, ensuring continuous, reliable functionality

  • Provide expert guidance on all technical aspects related to fire alarm maintenance, testing, upgrades, and replacement

  • Evaluate and commission fire alarm projects to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards

  • Coordinate with Facility Operation Directors to support modifications and installations, including the DACS fire alarm supervising station

  • Work with engineers and stakeholders on fire alarm integration for new facilities, as well as for renovations and repairs

  • Support a collaborative, team-based environment and mentor junior drafters, possibly leading or advising on process improvement initiatives

  • Maintain extensive knowledge in vendor management and collaborate with fire protection engineers and project managers for the selection and implementation of fire detection and alarm systems

  • Direct and provide strategic guidance to fire protection specialists and technologists, ensuring work aligns with Department of Energy (DOE) facility requirements

Leadership/Management

  • Provide leadership, vision, and tactical planning for assigned program scope, which requires integration across organizations

  • Ensure daily open communication with workers (including subcontractors) that promotes an environment where workers feel comfortable bringing errors, system weaknesses, and issues to management attention

  • Personnel and resource management and administration, including forecasting staffing requirements, staff recruiting and new hiring, directing assignments, assuring training and development, performance appraisals, salary management, and implementation of diversity goals

  • Actively monitor for emerging strategic trends relevant to the institution's mission, proactively advising leadership on potential challenges and recommending solutions to address them

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing teams of fire protection specialists and technologists, supporting facility operations and ensuring alignment with organizational goals

  • Proven ability to interface effectively with all levels of internal management, customers, oversight organizations, and, when required, members of the public

  • Demonstrated capability in successfully developing internal and external customer relationships and achieving a high degree of customer satisfaction. Expertise in negotiation with customers and support organizations to resolve conflicts

  • Proven track record of leading critical deliverables that support the Laboratory's mission, focusing on fire alarm systems, design reviews, and project engineering. Skilled in ensuring that fire protection services and system designs meet safety standards, regulatory compliance, and operational objectives

  • Demonstrated experience in managing budgets, including planning, allocation, and oversight to meet operational and project goals effectively

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience executing work in compliance with facility requirements, with in-depth knowledge of Integrated Work Management (IWM) and Integrated Safety and Security Management (ISSM) procedures

  • Skilled in operating within nuclear high-hazard facilities, including understanding safety authorization bases and executing Conduct of Operations plans

  • Familiar with LANL NFPA Standards, Engineering Standards Manual, as well as DOE Orders and Standards pertinent to facility design, construction, and project management

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
