Los Alamos National Laboratory Experimental RF / Lightning Science Post-Bachelors Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Electromagnetic Sciences and Cognitive Space Applications Group (ISR-2) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking candidates for a post-bachelors intern to assist with one or multiple projects related to experimental lightning, optical and electro-magnetic propagation and measurement research. The selected candidate will participate in experimental measurements and data analysis as part of the Experimental and Operational Electrodynamics Team within ISR-2.

ISR-2 is part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) division at LANL. We build, fly, operate, and analyze data from measurement systems deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties, and develop innovative sensors and ground, airborne and space hardware/software systems for basic scientific missions, nuclear nonproliferation, space situational awareness and remote sensing.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Programming Experience: Experience with at least one of the following: C/C++, Python, IDL or MATLAB.

  • Collaboration/Teaming: Demonstrated ability to work closely with scientific teams. Must be able to build and maintain effective relationships.

  • Communication: Strong written and verbal skills.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering. Eligibility is limited to students who have completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution within the past 3 years, and have not been accepted into a graduate program. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) is also required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with lightning detection and related atmospheric electricity instrumentation

  • Experience with data analysis, particularly with merged data from multiple sensors

  • Hands-on experience with experimental systems, including operation and troubleshooting.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
