Los Alamos National Laboratory Environmental Technician 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Do you enjoy working outdoors and have an interest in helping to protect the rich cultural heritage of northern New Mexico? The Environmental Stewardship Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an entry level Environmental Technician to help manage and protect cultural resources and enable mission work across the Laboratory.

The Environmental Technician will engage in a combination of fieldwork and office work and will be trained to conduct specific tasks in support of cultural resources protection and compliance. Cultural resources at the Laboratory include approximately 2,000 archaeological sites and several hundred historical facilities on Laboratory property that span 10,000 years of human activity on the Pajarito Plateau. The Environmental Technician will join the team of cultural resources specialists who ensure compliance with federal and state cultural resources laws and regulations. Specific tasks will include:

1. Assisting with field surveys and in-field documentation of archaeological sites, including note taking, measuring, and photography.

2. Placing and removing string and flagging tape around cultural resources.

3. Working with projects to ensure that they avoid cultural resources, including monitoring during project activities.

4. Assisting with the documentation of historical facilities, including note taking and photography.

5. Database entry.

Environmental Technician 1 ($46,300 - $71,400)

Environmental technician 1 is an entry-level position for those having some relevant experience, training and/or education. Must learn job skills and become familiar with Laboratory policies to complete assignments. Limited use and/or application of technical principles, theories, and concepts. Tasks performed are relatively simple but may require the application of basic skills related to the technical specialty. Develops solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope. Employees in jobs at this level have minimal responsibility for end products. Directions given by supervisor are specific and detailed, and work is closely supervised.

Environmental Technician 2 ($51,200 - $78,700)

Environmental Technician Level 2 is considered semi-skilled level for those who have gained sufficient experience or training to perform routine tasks independently. Frequently uses and applies technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques. May perform some non-routine tasks requiring the exercise of independent judgment. Provides solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity. Job includes some responsibility for end products. Incumbent works under general supervision. Follows established procedures for routine work. Supervisor provides detailed instructions for new assignments. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy, and accuracy.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Basic aptitude to develop experience and technical knowledge in environmental compliance and the ability to implement those principles.

  • General skills including note taking and illustration.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well on a team.

  • Ability to utilize personal protection equipment (PPE), such as protective footwear, safety glasses, safety vests, etc.

  • Physically able to work in demanding environments, including the ability to utilize ladders and stairs, carry instruments and supplies weighing up to 35 pounds, and work outdoors in cold or hot weather.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance.

Additional Minimum Job Requirements to be considered for Environmental Technician 2:

  • General knowledge and experience with environmental measures and associated requirements.

  • General experience and technical knowledge in environmental compliance and the ability to implement those principles.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 1-2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the cultures and cultural resources of the Southwest, especially northern New Mexico.

  • Experience using Global Positioning System (GPS) units or equivalent smart phone applications to orient yourself and record locations in the field.

  • Knowledge or experience working with indigenous peoples.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Lifting 20-30 pounds, Carrying 20-30 pounds, Standing, Walking, Climbing stairs.

Work Environment: Outdoors, In a cold environment, In a hot environment 90 - 100 F, PPE: Safety shoes or protective footgear.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
