What You Will Do

Be a part of something extraordinary! Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for a skilled Benefits professional to enhance the working experience for our employees and their families.

Reporting to the Benefits Manager, this advanced-level role will be responsible for the design and administration of employee benefits related to new, existing, or modified health and welfare, leave, and retirement programs. Additional responsibilities include providing plan guidance to managers and employees, updating and maintaining policies, ensuring compliance with associated laws and regulations, and assisting in the development of cost control procedures while ensuring the provision of competitive benefits.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Benefits Knowledge

Demonstrated experience and expert-level knowledge of benefits plans and programs, especially those related to health and welfare, leaves, and qualified, non-qualified, and pension retirement plans, including the demonstrated ability to support competitive benefits packages while applying cost controls and proper financial management.

Benefits Compliance

Demonstrated experience and expert-level knowledge interpreting and applying benefits-related laws and regulations, including ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, PPACA, and Secure 2.0.

Relationship Management

Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully and proactively work as part of a team to support customers and other identified stakeholders, including the demonstrated ability to effectively develop communication plans and convey complex benefits initiatives and alternative approaches to a broad variety of audiences, including all levels of internal staff, managers, and executives as well as external consultants, vendors, auditors, and retirees.

Benefits Metrics

Experience implementing continuous improvement initiatives through the development, charting, and reporting of benefit program/project metrics, including the demonstrated ability to use data to build cases for necessary change, measure progress, and demonstrate success.

Technology Management

Demonstrated ability to use HR systems (i.e. Oracle, People Soft, etc.) and databases (i.e. Microsoft Excel) to retrieve, organize, and report HR data.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 12 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. CBP or CEBS preferred. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification as an employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS), Professional in Human Resources or Certified Benefits Professional (CBP)

  • Familiarity with DOE/NNSA benefits reporting and compliance requirements

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is telework and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
