Los Alamos National Laboratory BAS Controls Design Engineer 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a BAS Controls Design Engineer. As a vital member of the ES-DO team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, and will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. Note: This position will be filled at either the Engineer 3/Engineer 4 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

BAS Controls Design Engineer Level 3 ($112,00 - $186,700):

This position requires a skilled professional who can apply engineering principles and concepts to solve facilities systems and operations challenges. As part of the ES team, you will modify and design Building Automation Systems (BAS) including the specification and sizing of controllers, networking of electromechanical devices sensors and computer hardware, development of graphical and text-based interfaces for building automation systems, utilization of CAD to develop BAS drawings, and programming of control algorithms. You will serve multiple design teams responsible for improving LANL's facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing Laboratory. The level 3 position includes the following job duties:

  • Assess existing conditions and operating trends for opportunities to improve operating efficiency

  • Work closely with stakeholders to develop scopes of work

  • Produce construction Contract Documents for BAS work

  • Adhere to LANL's Conduct of Engineering, prevailing codes and standards

  • Provide third-party reviews of sub-consultant BAS designs

  • Provide BAS technical support to construction and commissioning activities

  • Mentor junior design personnel

BAS Controls Design Engineer Level 4 ($135,300 - $227,700):

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the level 4 position includes the following job duties:

  • Render subject matter expert opinions.

  • Contribute to continual improvement of LANL's Engineering Standards and practices.

  • Support organizational initiatives for design and business practices.

  • Facilitate technical growth of the BAS design team.

  • Assist with work planning, staffing projections and hiring.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated expertise in BAS design

  • Demonstrated expert ability in application of engineering methods, and technology aided engineering tools to troubleshoot and resolve facility and operations-based engineering problems

  • Proficiency in developing and testing detailed BAS designs and installations to ensure functionality in conformance with design requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering work planning, budgeting, and design coordination

  • Demonstrated ability in coaching and mentoring of early career engineers

  • Expert ability to communicate, both written and verbally

  • Expert ability to collaboratively problem solve, demonstrate commitment, and function well in a team environment

Additional Job Requirements for BAS Controls Design Engineer Level 4:

  • Ability to lead others in the preparation of technical documents, studies, and reports associated with facility engineering projects

  • Experience leading a design team and / or organization

  • Broad knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to MEP facilities engineering

  • Expert knowledge of engineering work planning, budgeting and design coordination

  • Contributes to the development of organizational goals and objectives

Education/Experience for BAS Controls Design Engineer 3:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Education/Experience for BAS Controls Design Engineer 4:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable

  • Advanced knowledge of industry codes and standards (ISA, ISO, ANSI, IBC, NEC, NFPA, etc.)

  • Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes

  • Familiar with Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering along with industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes and standards

  • Experience with BAS Software, associated engineering tools, graphic software (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), and Microsoft Visio

  • Experience with Automated Logic and Phoenix software, including WebCtrl, SiteBuilder, ViewBuilder, LogicBuilder, InterOp 3.02, Alert, Draw, EDB, Eikon, Supervision, and Accel Works

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position (ENGINEER 4 ONLY) is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
