Summary This position is located in Lorton Virginia, in the Lower Potomac Field Station. Responsibilities Operate one or more types of gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction heavy equipment in flat or rolling terrain environments. Use equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel, or earth. Use equipment to transfer material into dump trucks and clear brush, tree stumps, and rocks. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) operating gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as road graders, bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, or trench diggers in simple terrains; (2) operating equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials; (3) conducting routine minor or lower-graded maintenance in the areas of carpentry, masonry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and/or welding; (4) interpreting instructions/specifications associated with heavy equipment operation. SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position has a Selective Placement Factor which is (A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License). Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is used by the operators in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location of some of the controls and attachments, the operators are frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. Work Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. The operators are exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. They are subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
