How does this role contribute to our collective success?

To support our growth objectives at AXIS, we are investing significantly in our Exposure and Loss Analytics systems. This position is for a Senior Analytical Developer within the Risk and Modelling Centre of Excellence (CoE).

You will be providing your expertise, critical thinking and creativity to help evolve our Risk Management ecosystem in new and innovative ways. This position requires the ability to work independently on complex system components, while also collaborating as part of dynamic and agile project teams.

As part of a global team, you will be working with highly experienced talent to enhance existing solutions and design new ones to deliver and integrate capabilities across (re)insurance pricing, catastrophe modelling, loss accumulation and exposure management. You will require an understanding of these domains along with the underpinning mathematical and statistical methodologies.

What will you do in this role?

As a Senior Analytical Developer in the Accumulation team, you will support the Property Catastrophe and Cyber Loss Accumulation processes along with other areas such as Casualty, Portfolio Optimization and DFA Modelling.

In your role, you will partner with the Delivery Lead for Accumulation to develop applications and scripts for Accumulation based analytics. This includes data-engineering-related development for Loss Model inputs and outputs (e.g. Verisk Touchstone and RMS Cyber Solutions) that enable the collection, processing, modelling, storage and querying of data.

It also includes driving the development of bespoke Financial Calculation Engines. In this area, your Analytical domain expertise will be key to supporting validation activities.

The Accumulation Team is pioneering the use of Databricks with other cloud-native services in AXIS. The Vision is to implement a shared-services architecture for all Accumulation systems providing a highly-scalable and performant Analytics Platform for high-resolution modelled losses. The Senior Analytical Developer will be a key contributor in executing this Vision by becoming an expert in Databricks and fully adopting its use within the Accumulation team.

In addition, the Accumulation team also develops Web Applications and Excel-based Tools (using Add-ins and Macros) built using C#.NET with SQL Server. In your role, you will contribute to the development, testing, support and maintenance of these Tools and Applications.

Responsibilities include:

  • Data Engineering activities for the collection, processing, modelling & storage of Exposures and Modelled Loss data

  • Testing, validation and development activities to deliver and support Financial Calculation Engines

  • Business analysis of existing processes within the Global Exposure Management team to understand pain-points and opportunities for improvements

  • Contributing to Web Application Development & Excel-based automation tools including developer testing and liaising with QA testers

  • Effort estimation, identifying dependencies and advising of options for development

  • Contributing to team development practices including DevOps ticketing, PRs, Wiki authoring etc

What you need to have:

Developer Skills

  • Extensive experience as a full-stack software engineer/developer

  • Strong experience with Microsoft development and tooling stacks:

  • .NET Core, Web API, MVC

  • C#

  • MS SQL

  • nUnit

  • Entity Framework

  • Experience with Object Oriented JavaScript / modern JavaScript libraries (React, Angular).

  • Commercial experience of industry standards, best practice and development methodologies such as factory pattern, IoC, LINQ, delegates and generics

  • Practical experience in branching, merging code, continuous testing and software delivery pipelines and containers using Visual Studio, Azure DevOps, Azure Pipelines or other tools

  • Real-life experience with Agile methodologies including SCRUM; experience working with Product Backlogs using Azure DevOps

  • The ability to manage APIs, exposing/consuming via Microservices (Rest and SOAP)

  • Sound understanding of RDBMS and Data Repositories (SQL Server, MySQL, Azure, noSQL)

  • Knowledge of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture

Domain Experience

  • Strong experience in specialty insurance and reinsurance, working with exposure data and modelled loss data

  • A good understanding of the business processes that produce and consume exposure and modelled loss data with the ability to develop data controls & validations at various points in the processes

  • Experience with risk and modelling solutions/data (e.g. AIR Touchstone, RMS Risklink)

  • Ability to develop financial & statistical metrics from distributions including numerical tests

  • Experience acting as a primary software developer and/or Integration lead on significant to complex IT projects

  • A history of successfully bringing innovative solutions to complex problems

Soft Skills

  • The ability to collaborate effectively and communicate transparently

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • The ability and the enthusiasm to learn new technologies quickly

Additional experience and qualifications that are desirable include:

  • Cloud infrastructure and services (including Azure, Azure Service Bus, Data Factory)

  • Experience with Databricks

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Physics or Mathematics
