Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

The ideal candidate will have experience in a team environment, deep technical knowledge, and experience in site development, site master planning, building design and detailing. In addition, this position requires an individual who can demonstrate the ability to ensure highly resilient and scalable service designs through partnership with other members of the service team.

The role will provide opportunity for career and technical growth, provide technical direction, and the facilitation and delivery of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs.

Responsibilities

  • The Principal Architect Subject Mater Expert (SME) will provide leadership and coordinated direction for works as it pertains to the development of datacenters on both new builds and lease sites. Working closely with internal and external consultants to provide optimum designs with a focus on standardization.

  • The Datacenter Senior Architectural SME will provide architectural design support for projects at Site Due Diligence, Site Master planning and throughout Detailed Design through construction to handover.  

  • Apply best practice in Health & Safety throughout the project lifecycle.

  • This role will require collaboration with Global Technical Excellence team, Global Strategy teams and DCE Operations Team to develop the datacenter designs from basis of design (BOD) to issue for constructions (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of datacenter until handover.

  • To be successful in this role the candidate will collaborate with internal & external customers, direct the Architectural technical delivery of multiple, concurrent, complete Datacenter design solutions aligned with the scopes, schedules and budgets of the projects. 

  • The candidate will provide technical direction to our vendors who include professional Architects and engineers of multiple disciplines to achieve optimum repeatable designs.

  • Collaborate with the Site Selection, Operations, Security, Design teams and external stakeholders to develop data center (DC) designs, starting from project conception to issue for construction (IFC) for new DC projects build outs and major infrastructure upgrades.

  • Collaboration with Global teams to utilize Microsoft standards as the basis to create the issued for construction (IFC) documents 

  • The SME will also work on the lease portfolio, AI design, retrofits and upgrades of existing facilities.

  • Applying project controls to ensure overall project and change management on all projects

Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Architect with RIBA/RIAI, or equivalent.

  • Extensive experience as an Architect in areas of advanced engineering, laboratories, electronics etc.

  • Design experience in mission critical projects (datacenters)

  • Good knowledge and understanding of datacenter design including mechanical and electrical space requirements and experience of detailed co-ordination with all other disciplines Structural/Architectural/M&E/Telecoms

  • Ability to navigate in 3D Models, e.g. BIM360/Navisworks/Revit

  • Ability to contribute to and direct site master planning development

  • Good understanding of construction techniques, sequencing, and site logistics

  • Experience in People, Project and Change Management

  • Ability to lead teams of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

  • Demonstrated ability to write, speak, and present information effectively and persuasively.

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Highly organized and able to oversee concurrent projects and focus under pressure 

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to lead and be proactive.

  • Excellent problem-solving, judgment, team building, and decision-making skills

  • Experience using MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, MS Project, Visio, and Excel including effective reporting/presentations of project information.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
