Overview The HVAC Commissioning technician will work with the campus Energy Engineer to follow a commissioning process to thoroughly verify and validate the function of university building heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This will include troubleshooting, repair and installation of equipment. The successful applicant must have the aptitude to understand complex mechanical systems and to interpret construction drawings (if already has the experience, to demonstrate that ability). Accomplishes this by applying a positive attitude in conjunction with technical knowledge, and the ability to analyze and understand unique air handling systems.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates projects and schedules work to ensure timely completion and quality standards, as needed.
  • Performs customer service duties by checking with building managers and users following up with customers and ensuring that their needs are met.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and calibrates laboratory flow hoods.
  • Leads, guides, and trains other technicians in applicable procedures and techniques.
  • Coordinates and participates in various meetings and committees to enhance and develop the Facilities department and resources.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs HVAC controls, systems, and equipment problems.
  • Performs inspections and preventative maintenance on HVAC systems, equipment, and controls as it pertains to buildings being commissioned.
  • Checks all aspects of the HVAC control system and associated equipment to ensure that it is balanced and in correct and working order.
  • Participates in major HVAC component, equipment and controls evaluation of complex BSL-3 system problems.
  • Evaluates automation operations on all control systems to ensure cost effectiveness with minimal down time.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area and work site.
  • Participates in administrative duties by overseeing various shop functions including: physical facilities, refrigerant records and procedures, and commissioning projects.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of testing procedures for shop personnel.
  • Ascertains and troubleshoots problems and directs the right department to fix problems and performs follow up to make sure problems are corrected.
  • Ability to work with contractor and departmental Techs.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

  • To be considered as a Commissioning HVAC Tech Apprentice: Applicants may be required to take an HVAC aptitude test. Placement in the HVAC Apprenticeship program will be based upon test results and years of experience in the HVAC field. The test will be arranged and paid for by USU Facilities.
