THIS POSITION IS SHORT TERM, MAX 1000 HOURS IN A CALENDAR YEAR

North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customers' mission. Available employment opportunities may range from administrative and logistical support to advanced technical positions.

Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.

The Global Security N Program has an opening for a Nuclear Nonproliferation Research Scientist. The successful candidate will participate in the Multi-Indicator Conversion Assessment (MICA) and Find, Observe, Confirm, Understand and Surveil (FOCUS) venture projects as a subject matter expert in remote nuclear proliferation detection systems. Both ventures are funded by the DOE/NNSA's Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DNN) office.

This position may require the employee to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift, and/or weekends to accomplish goals. The selected candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Essential Duties

-Advise and participate in the on-going MICA venture management team (VMT) to collaboratively define, manage, and support the MICA venture.

-Participate in MICA-specific tasks including relating observables to facility operations, determining indicators and signatures, and performing analyses using facility data and measured data.

-Develop and participate in tabletop exercises, technical exchange meetings and reviews.

  • Participate in FOCUS venture development and execution to define needs, conduct trade-off analyses, offer solutions, and draw upon prior experiences to formulate the essential elements of a successful venture.

-Provide support and advice to the LLNL Principal Investigator in meeting technical and programmatic milestones and deliverables.

-Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

-MS in chemistry, engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience working on ventures and projects funded by DOE/NNSA/NA-22 Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DOE DNN).

-Experience participating in providing technical guidance for science, modeling, and experimentation within nuclear fuel cycle (NFC) R&D projects.

-Experience working with results from multiple modalities of remote and in situ measurements to address specific hypotheses within Nuclear Fuel Cycle (NFC) R&D projects.

-Experience working with facility ground truth and comparing with measured results.

-Experience with DOE DNN office, portfolios, requirements, goals, objectives, and venture/project development and execution.

-Experience working with interested USG stakeholders promoting benefits and interests of the MICA venture.

-Demonstrated ability to work well with team members within LLNL and across DOE Laboratories.

-Fluency working in SCIF environment.

-Ability to travel.

-Demonstrated experience in mentoring new and mid-career employees.

Desired Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

-PhD chemistry, engineering or a related field or equivalent experience working on ventures and projects funded by DOE/NNSA/NA-22 Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DOE DNN).

Special Requirements

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-employment drug test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q and SCI (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
