The person serving in the position of Operating Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining one or more high pressure gas, oil or wood fired boilers and such auxiliary equipment as steam turbines, air compressors, and generators, water softeners that provide steam, electrical power and auxiliary services. Observes meters and gauges to determine operating condition of equipment and to regulate flow of water and fuel in accordance with needs and safety standards. Adjusts and repairs equipment. Cleans or supervises cleaning of boilers and other equipment. Records such data as hours of operation, temperature and pressures and fuel consumption in a log. Performs plant housekeeping duties. Participates in inspecting for making repairs and adjustments to pumps, valves, steam lines, boilers, pipes, compressors and other equipment. Reports directly to the Director of Facility Services.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
Operate and monitor 3 high pressure steam boilers in a central power plant.
Operate and monitor all boiler related equipment.
Operate and monitor 2 standalone generators for back up electrical power.
Make required repairs to Power Plant equipment that do not require a licensed contractor.
Document all monitoring and repair activities of the above equipment.
Monitor alarms and make adjustments as needed on Building Automation System (BAS).
Serve as Liaison (field phone calls) for hospital communications regarding urgent physical building needs and emergencies.
Power Plant housekeeping duties, including handling waste (infectious, hazardous, and common).
Other duties as assigned by Manager or Chief Operating Engineer.
High school diploma
Valid driver's license
Current 1B Stationary Engineer's License
Three (3) years’ experience operating a high-pressure plant of 300 horsepower or more
Basic computer skills to work with email, BAS, and Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS)
Five (5) or more years’ experience in large institutional facility. Any additional trade certifications
