School of Integrative Biology

Job Summary

Organize and execute laboratory and field activities related to bee research for Dolezal laboratory, including managing molecular lab space, student projects, data collection and organization, and general assistance with day-to-day research tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • 1)Assist in organizing and coordinating resources associated with multiple research projects.
  • 2)Help design and execute research projects and experiments involving honey bees and other insects. Overnight travel for fieldwork will occur during some seasons. Will require field work in remote farm or natural area locations working with pollinators, including stinging bees. Physical work including fieldwork outdoors collecting ecological samples in agricultural and natural settings, e.g., collecting plant and insect samples, netting insects, setting insect traps. Also may involve work with some beekeeping, which can involve working with honey bees (stinging insects), lifting heavy boxes, and general physical exertion.
  • 3) Process, generate, and analyze laboratory data (e.g., use molecular techniques like PCR, qPCR, etc.). Work in the laboratory involves general laboratory hazards and chemical hazards that are handled according to proper lab safety protocols. All of these tasks require the use of appropriate PPE, e.g., beekeeping suits, labcoats, safety glasses, etc.
  • 4) Interact with bee researchers to facilitate their research needs.
  • 5) Train undergrad and graduate research students in working with bees and assist in the planning, setting up, and performing of their experiments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in biology or related field

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree in biology or related field

One (1) year working in laboratory or field research related to honey bees or other pollinators

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge in the areas of bee behavior, physiology, and/or ecology, including skills in field or laboratory research; Ability to communicate about research clearly with a team of scientists and work collaboratively
  • Ability to analyze data generated from behavioral, ecological, or laboratory research; ability to prepare summaries of methods and results of research projects for publication in scientific journals.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated effective communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences. Commitment to diversity and inclusion. Ability to multi-task in order to meet stringent deadlines while producing accurate work. Ability to work harmoniously with faculty, staff, and students from a wide variety of disciplines.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The position may become non-visiting at a later time dependent upon funding and/or programmatic needs. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the March 30, 2023. The salary range is \$48,000 - \$52,000 commensurate with experience.
