Navistar, Inc. Controls Engineer in Lisle, Illinois

Position Overview

Navistar is seeking a Controls Engineer with extensive experience in system engineering and embedded software development for electric and conventional powertrain vehicles. The Controls Engineer will be responsible for developing advanced controls software, defining and managing software development requirements, and conducting testing on both Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems and vehicles. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in control systems, software development, and testing methodologies, with a focus on vehicle systems— such as torque systems and transmission controls.

The role involves coordinating with cross-functional teams and suppliers to ensure the seamless integration of system requirements, troubleshooting vehicle-level issues, and performing detailed data analysis. The individual must be familiar with the vehicle system lifecycle, from requirement development and DFMEA to post-production technical support, including model-based design and simulation using MATLAB/Simulink and industry-standard tools.

Responsibilities

  • Develop control algorithms and software for vehicle motion control systems.

  • Define and document software development requirements based on system specifications and functional requirements.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (hardware, validation, system engineering) to ensure the successful integration of control software with hardware.

  • Perform testing of control software on Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) platforms to validate performance and robustness.

  • Conduct vehicle-level testing to ensure system functionality and performance under real-world conditions.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve software and system issues during development and testing phases.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant automotive standards and safety regulations during software development.

  • Participate in design reviews, peer reviews, and technical discussions to ensure software quality and system optimization.

  • Continuously monitor, analyze, and improve control algorithms to enhance system performance and efficiency.

  • Support the development of documentation, including test plans, reports, and technical manuals.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

  • At least 8 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

  • At least 6 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

  • At least 3 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Desired Skills

  • Strong experience in developing control algorithms for motion control systems

  • Proficiency in control software development using MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, or similar programming languages.

  • Experience with model-based design (MBD) tools and techniques.

  • Hands-on experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing, including test case development and execution.

  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics and control system fundamentals.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex software and system issues.

  • Familiarity with automotive industry standards (e.g., ISO 26262, ASPICE).

  • Experience with vehicle-level testing and data analysis tools (e.g., CANalyzer, CANape).

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable software solutions.
