Job Title : Senior Environmental Health and Safety Specialist I

Location : Lexington, MA

About the role:

As a Senior EHS Specialist I, you will be a member of the Takeda Massachusetts Biologics Operations EHS team and will support EHS requirements across the Research and Development (R&D) laboratories in Lexington. You will manage multiple EHS programs, use the site's EHS electronic management system, and provide daily support to important partners. You will develop partnerships within R&D's scientific community and supporting organizations through and on the floor presence. You will report to the Associate Director, Environment Health & Safety.

How you will contribute:

  • Support and participate in the laboratory safety committee, assist with laboratory safety inspections, and provide EHS coaching to the chair and committee members.

  • Participate in several laboratory support groups and project teams to ensure mitigation of introduced risks from non-routine operations or changes that result in EHS impacts.

  • Identify and document unsafe work conditions, support investigations of incidents and identification of corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs).

  • Partner with laboratory and support personnel to identify changes and non-routine operations, conduct management of change assessments and develop Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).

  • Provide oversight for chemical inventory management, review new chemical approvals, and support the compliance of chemical storage requirements.

  • Participate in delivering safety training to employees and new hires.

  • Lead site compliance programs and risk management goals including Chemical Hygiene, Biosafety, Bloodborne Pathogens, Controlled Substances, Respiratory Protection, and Hazard Communication.

  • Use Takeda's EHS electronic management system to monitor performance for EHS events, investigations, CAPAs, permits, management of change, inspections, risk assessments, and compliance obligations.

  • Support the site's new product introduction team for new hazards and materials being introduced into the laboratories through management of change assessments, qualitative risk assessments, and implementation of new controls when identified.

  • Participate on the global and local safety committees by providing support and training of EHS inspections, gembas and external/internal EHS requirements.

  • Participate on project teams to provide EHS support and ensure external and internal EHS requirements are met.

  • Support internal audits and inspections from regulatory authorities, when applicable.

  • Exercise considerable latitude in determining goals of assignments. May determine procedures and methods on new assignments.

  • Analyze data and forecast trends to determine state of future compliance.

  • Work with Government bodies who regulate EH&S for the site (Mass DEP, OSHA, USEPA, DOT, DPH, Fire Marshall, etc.) and Takeda suppliers and service providers to the site along with EHS professionals from other companies and industries for benchmarking and networking.

What you bring to Takeda:

  • Essential: 4-8 years' experience in the EHS field; experience supporting laboratory environments; demonstrated knowledge of OSHA general industry requirements.

  • Bachelor's degree in technical discipline: Engineering, safety, industrial hygiene, environmental studies, life science or similar field would be ideal. Master's Degree in related field would be ideal. Professional certification such as CSP, CIH, CHP, or equivalent would be ideal.

  • Experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing/laboratories or other regulated industry (oil and gas, pulp and paper, chemical manufacturing, steel, etc.).

  • Experience with ISO management systems would be ideal.

  • Work with EHS peers and colleagues to provide and receive recommendations and feedback.

  • Identify potential areas of non-compliance with business or facility changes and set expectations to achieve a future state of compliance.

  • Knowledgeable in local, state, and federal regulatory requirements and proposed regulatory or legislative changes at all levels.

  • Work with all programs in Microsoft Office and software systems for EHS reporting.

  • Operate a car (valid driver's license) and travel by air, rail or other means of passenger conveyance.

  • Travel to satellite locations required (Belmont, N. Reading, and Alewife - Cambridge).

  • Travel to corporate EHS meetings, conferences, audits, etc. upon request.

  • Professional development by attending EHS professional organization meetings whether local or out of state.

Important Considerations

At Takeda, our patients rely on us to deliver quality products. As a result, we must follow strict rules in our manufacturing facilities to ensure we are not endangering the quality of the product. In this role, you may:

  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and other clean room garments daily. This may include safety shoes, safety glasses, aprons, face shields, lab coats, full body gowns, hair nets and gloves and hearing protection.

  • Need to remove all make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish and/or artificial fingernails while in the manufacturing environment.

  • Work in a cold, wet environment.

  • Work multiple shifts, including weekends, or be asked to work supplemental hours, as necessary.

  • Work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and Celite that may require respiratory protection.

  • Candidate must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning and wear of protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. No make-up, jewelry, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in manufacturing work environments.

  • May involve occasional work in a cold, hot, high noise, at heights, wet environment.

  • Work may be required outside of the standard 8-hour workday including weekends.

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 25 lbs. and remain standing or walking for extended periods in the performance of site inspection and compliance activities. In general, the position requires a combination of sedentary work and walking around observing conditions.

U.S. Base Salary Range:

$84,000.00 - $132,000.00

The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/ or long-term incentives. U.S. based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others.
