Novo Nordisk Director - Global Rare Disease Project in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Position

The position is a key role in Rare Disease Research (RDR) organization to assist in the development and integration of portfolio strategy across rare bleeding disorders, rare endocrine disorders and haemoglobinopathies areas in Denmark and USA. The role also helps develop and execute an external innovation and partnership strategy to expand and accelerate Rare Disease Research portfolio within sustainable growth model, maintaining a balance of internal resources (FTE and finances) with external resources (CRO’s and academic/industry collaborators).

Scope and responsibilities:

  • Holds project portfolio responsibility for rare disease research

  • Supports to establish and maintain cross-functional alignment within GDD, GRT, R&ED, Development, Medical Affairs, Commercial, insights and portfolio strategy teams in rare disease organization

  • Innovator lead, E4C core team member, drive cross-functional innovation, Rare D representative for Novel, Pre-Project Portfolio and GNAT

  • Facilitates external opportunity EIC pool and participates in evaluation of rare disease collaboration and BD opportunities

  • Collaborate with rare disease Research Scientist(s), Biology leads, technical leads, PMs and PVP’s for governance interactions

  • Participate in LT work and strategy setting for RDR portfolio

  • Helps TA head and RDR-LT to effectively communicate the portfolio strategy

  • Contributes to progress on portfolio goals, and Rare D and GDD strategic priorities and internal/external innovation

    Relationship

    Reports to the CVP Rare Disease Research. Develops and maintains an organizational network to drive RDR impact. Interacts and collaborates across all levels in GDD, Rare Disease organization including ROLT, Development, Commercial, Medical Affairs, CMC/PSQIT and insights and portfolio strategy teams. External interactions with CRO’s academic and industry collaborators.

    This is an individual contributor role but leads and executes on RDR organization’s mission and vision via influence and leadership and via clear communication of the RDR portfolio strategy across the organization. The role reports directly into the TA head and works closely with RDR LT.

    Essential Functions

  • Project Portfolio responsibilities

  • Ensure efficient project execution

  • Promote to the point research plans including killer experiment in projects

  • Contribute to development of and execution of research strategy

  • Securing global scientific cross-organizational collaboration

  • Ensure seamless collaboration with other areas, e.g. GNAT, GRT and the Pre-Project Portfolio Team

  • Scientific research within rare diseases

  • The holder of this position is expected to aid in developing projects identifying and exploring new therapeutic targets and principles (biology, modalities, etc.) across the Rare Disease Research (RDR) indication areas, as well as related areas within Rare Disease Research. This is to be achieved by ensuring constructive challenge, and stakeholder alignment. Also, promotion of innovation/ideas, as well as supporting generation of new or improved molecules and models/methods/assays. Understanding of drug development, the global project framework and in dept understanding of in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo techniques, is necessary

  • The holder of the position is expected to provide key expertise within project progression and directly support the portfolio in the RDR Innovation Focus Group, pre-G0-projects, G0-projects and post-G0 projects, to drive efficient project execution, and to facilitate a scientific environment that will secure advances in area expertise and versatility as well as inspire new ideas and hypotheses to drive projects in RDR

  • Expert participation in evaluation of BD opportunities

  • Coordinates scientific evaluation of external assets within field of expertise

  • Coordinates research Due Diligence of external assets within field of expertise

  • Collaborate with Scientist(s) and Research projects

  • Participate in development and tuning of the portfolio and the way we do project management

  • Support in governance interaction preparations and coaching for the interactions

  • Ensure alignment on portfolio cross-organization and internally in RDR

  • Provide collaborators with relevant information in a timely and constructive manner

  • Participate in RDR activities

  • Ensure and maintain high standard in RDR governance interactions

  • Optimize our external collaborations for focus, outcome and professionalism

  • Participate in additional household activities, e.g. organize science meetings, align with working groups, Evolve performance talks

  • Role model for NNWay and work in adherence to the OHS regulations

  • Support and ensure a good workings environment in the area

  • Support a safe working environment, mentally and physically

  • Participate in development and execution of Strategy for own area as well as influence functional strategy

  • Full knowledge about the CVP area strategy and cross-functional knowledge about roles and responsibilities of each area within the CVP area

  • Represents Novo Nordisk in various governmental working groups, to teach internally and potentially externally at universities or business schools, to publish articles, and to represent Novo Nordisk at conferences etc.

    Physical Requirements

    Approximately 10% domestic and international travel required.

    Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field is required

  • A minimum of 8+ years relevant experience is required

  • A subject matter expert in rare diseases, with knowledge in early research and drug development in rare disease, with a high level of creativity & curiosity with a strong innovative mindset

  • Communication

  • Ability to communicate at all levels across NN and convince/challenge internal stakeholders up to EVP mgmt. team level

  • Ability to find agreements through flexibility and compromise or convincing others of new concepts, practices and ideas

  • Might often be required to convince external parties who are skeptical or unwilling to accept new concepts, practices, and approaches

  • Ability to present NN in interactions with KOLs, with external assets etc. in a proactive and critical, yet friendly manner
