Argonne National Laboratory Senior Accountant in Lemont, Illinois
The Senior Accountant ensures accounting records are complete and in accordance with Laboratory policies and procedures, Department of Energy guidelines, the Prime Contract, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Cost Accounting Standards, and applicable Federal and State regulations. The Senior Accountant provides guidance to junior accounting staff, directly oversees work completed by the accounting team, and manages the accounting team in the absence of the Accounting Manager
Applies accounting principles to create, review and maintain controls and systems in the area of financial reporting for the Laboratory.
Reviewing and approving transactions, preparing and posting journal entries, allocating costs, collecting and evaluating data, creating and reviewing reconciliations, preparing reports, analyzing financial information.
Assist in planning and execution of month end and year end close process, including reporting the Laboratory’s financial information to DOE’s STARS system.
Creates, maintains and oversees controls over general ledger accounts and reconciliations.
Interacts on a regular basis and provides excellent customer service to Laboratory management, FMPS staff, divisional representatives, the Department of Energy, and outside vendors and agencies.
Takes lead on special projects as they arise while also adhering to the specific deadlines of the position.
Responds to a multitude of requests for accounting information from the Department of Energy, Laboratory Management, and Laboratory personnel often involving complex analyses and aggressive deadlines.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Laboratory financial policies including both accounting and budget issues.
Knowledge of Laboratory operations and structure, relationships and practices.
Knowledge of Department of Energy orders, the Prime Contract, STARS reporting guidelines, Laboratory financial policies, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Cost Accounting Standards.
Knowledge of automated financial systems in several platforms/environments
Personal initiative and leadership qualities, strong analytical and quantitative skills, and the ability to organize and manage complex special projects.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge, skills, and experience, including using advanced features with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
Ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines.
Ability to analyze information and look toward improving processes.
Ability to anticipate problem situations, judging the magnitude of, and developing an action plan to resolve them successfully.

This level of knowledge and expertise is typically attained through a bachelors degree in a technical, financial or business management field with an emphasis in technical analysis, and a minimum of 5 years of appropriate financial experience. A masters degree and/or CPA are preferred though directly related experience may substitute for academic work at the graduate level.
The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PA3 or PA4) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:
PA3 Level: Bachelor’s and 4+ years of experience or equivalent.
PA4 Level: Bachelor’s and 6+ years of experience or equivalent.
