Argonne National Laboratory Principal HPC Systems Administration Specialist - Data Services in Lemont, Illinois
Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where “dream teams” of world- class researchers work alongside experts from industry, academia and other government laboratories to address vital national challenges in clean energy, environment, technology and national security.
The selected individual will work directly with other server and service administrators to ensure the continued expansion, reliability, and sustainability of the LCF service infrastructure with a focus on data-related efforts. Success in this role means you are able to support servers in a mixed operating system environment and work efficiently with other operation team members as well as users. Researchers will rely on your guidance when it comes to the environment so you will have a direct impact in keeping research productive. With a focus being on data-related workflows, effort will encompass working with some of the largest (10s-100s of PB) and fastest (100s-1000s of GB/s) parallel files systems in the world and similarly fastest (100s-1000s of PF) supercomputers in the world. Candidate also will coordinate with operations team members for system administration duties. Appointee will participate in the design and planning for improved/novel approaches for providing workflows to/on file system and disk storage services.
Must be able to pass an Office of Personnel Management National Background Investigations Bureau background investigation.
Comprehensive knowledge of systems administration tools and languages such as Perl, Python, C, PHP, and shell scripts
Experience building custom packages for RHEL/CentOS using RPM.
Experience implementing systems-level security technologies like SELinux and following security best-practices.
Expertise in installation, management and use of software such as compilers, scientific applications, and job resource managers.
Experience implementing, troubleshooting, and supporting Linux/Unix operating systems.
Knowledge of Storage Area Networking and associated storage arrays.
Comprehensive ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
Flexibility in dealing with assignments and working on several projects simultaneously.
Preferred, but not required:
Comprehensive knowledge and expertise in installing, configuring, tuning, and supporting Lustre file systems.
Experience with Puppet, Chef, Ansible or equivalent configuration management tool.
Ability to be on site as needed.
Familiarity with tools like GitHub and GitLab.
Experience with datacenter infrastructure management (UNIX/Docker/ Kubernetes/ Microservices)
Experience using tools such as Grafana and Nagios to monitor systems, metrics, and create dashboards.
Experience deploying and maintaining virtualized environments using VMWare.
Comprehensive problem-solving skills.
This position can be hired at one of two levels and the related requirements are as follows:
PT3: Bachelor’s degree + 4 years of experience, or a Master’s degree + 2 years, or equivalent
PT4: Bachelor’s degree + 6 years of experience, or a Master’s degree + 4 years, or equivalent
