Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee in Lemont, Illinois

The Separation Science group in the Chemical Science and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applications for a postdoctoral research associate to conduct basic research using porous adsorbents and membranes in the area of chemical separations.

The successful candidate will join an interactive team of experts with diverse backgrounds in inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry, as well as condensed matter physics in addressing challenging questions in chemical separations—the answers to which will contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

The candidate will be expected to contribute synthetic and advanced characterization skills of solid separation systems such as porous adsorbents, membranes, and supported liquid membranes, to the group’s greater efforts to understand the physical and chemical factors enabling low-energy separation technologies with applications focusing on f -element separations. As a contributor to a group effort, the candidate will have the opportunity to lead studies, including the preparation of manuscripts and the presentation of their results in a national forum. There will be opportunities to utilize the advanced instrumentation available at the user facilities at Argonne National Laboratory, including the Advanced Photon Source (APS) and Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM), as well as radiotracer techniques to enable f -element separations.

Education and Experience Requirements

The successful candidate should possess the following, preferred qualifications:

  • A basic understanding of chemical separations. Demonstrated ability to design and conduct research addressing fundamental scientific questions.

  • A Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field at the time of start date.

  • Significant research experience with membrane synthesis and functionalization or porous polymer design and synthesis or related research.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Enthusiasm to work in an engaging team environment.

  • Expertise in electron microscopy and experience with interrogating the molecular and supramolecular drivers behind polymer structure-function would be an asset.
