Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee – Battery Recycling in Lemont, Illinois

The Materials Recycling R&D group in the Applied Materials Division (AMD) has an opening for a postdoctoral appointee. This position will involve developing and scaling cost-effective methods for recycling lithium-ion batteries through DOE’s ReCell Center for Advanced Battery Recycling. The researcher may also work with companies to research and validate unique lithium-ion battery recycling processes. This will require innovative approaches to solve challenges that go beyond the use of pilot scale or commercialized equipment. As such we are seeking candidates that have demonstrated the ability to design, build, and operate their own experimental apparatus to solve challenges. The position will require flexibility and a willingness to learn new techniques and approaches. In addition to battery recycling projects, the postdoctoral appointee will have the opportunity to work on that focus on improving Li-ion battery or critical materials supply chains.

Position Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science (those with other degrees but have similar skills to those listed will be considered)

  • Skilled oral and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.

  • Proven track record showing the ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in a multidisciplinary team while meeting project deliverables and milestones.

  • Highly self-motivated candidate who demonstrates creative and proactive approaches towards scientific problem solving as evidenced by publications and recommendations.

  • Skilled in installing, modifying, and maintaining equipment.

  • Willingness to enforce and abide by safety rules.

  • Comfortable working with large volumes of hazardous chemicals.

  • Flexibility to change projects and work on a variety of projects simultaneously.

  • Knowledge in the following areas and techniques is desirable: lithium-ion batteries, materials characterization, running reactors, recycling, mineral processing, mechanical separations, and electrochemical separations.
