Argonne National Laboratory Deputy IT Director in Lemont, Illinois

The mission of Argonne’s Computing, Environment, and Life Sciences (CELS) directorate is to enable groundbreaking scientific and technical accomplishments in areas of critical importance to the 21st century. The CELS directorate integrates Argonne’s research in the life sciences (subsurface science, terrestrial ecology, molecular biology, microbiology, protein chemistry, bioinformatics, and computational biology) with the environmental sciences (earth science, energy science, and global climate research), and the computing sciences (applied mathematics, data science, and computational science) and has established a leadership computing facility essential for advanced simulation.

As a Leader of the CELS Systems team you would provide project leadership to the technical operation and support of CLS High Performance Computing and Experimental Computing infrastructure. Lends expertise as a specialist to develop resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity. Also responsible for determining objectives of assignments, including responsibility for overall technical planning for projects and activities.

Major and Supporting actions:

  • Leads in the design, development, and operations of both CLS High Performance Computing (HPC) and CLS Experimental Computing (XP) resources and related projects.

  • Leads the day-to-day activities of the HPC and XP team and evaluates the performance of assigned staff.

  • Works with computational science teams and researchers to aid their use of CLS HPC and XP resources.

  • With CELS IT Director, assists in design and development of CLS Production IT systems, including rolling technologies developed in XP into production computing.

  • Acts as backup to CELS IT Director.

  • Experiments with, assesses, and deploys new technology.

Position Requirements


  • Knowledge and expertise in UNIX systems administration, network architecture, networked file systems, and storage systems.

  • Knowledge of and expertise in systems administration tools and languages including Python, SQL, and shell scripts.

  • Expertise in virtualization technologies.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to lead a technical services team, to participate as a technical resource, and to achieve assigned goals within designated timeframes.

  • Ability to communicate well with people, of diverse backgrounds and computer knowledge. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Flexibility in dealing with multiple assignments and working on several projects simultaneously in an environment that has rapidly shifting and often contradictory demands and priorities.

  • Bachelor's degree + 7 years of related experience, or equivalent


  • Expertise in installation, configuration, and management of large numbers of computers and in use of software such as compilers, scientific applications, and job resource managers

  • Knowledge of private cloud architecture, operations and OpenStack.

  • Knowledge of system design for resource intensive workloads.

  • Knowledge of system interconnect fabrics, including high performance ethernet and Infiniband.

  • Experience with common HPC technologies, including computing job schedulers, allocation systems, and reservation systems such as PBSPro, Slurm, Maui, Torque, Moab, SGE, and similar products.

  • Experience with or interest in hardware, systems, and methods related to Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, including AI accelerators.

  • Skill and knowledge in computational sequence analysis using existing tools.

  • Familiarity with the hardware and software of mass storage systems and technologies used such as RAID, iSCSI, Fibre Channel.
