Argonne National Laboratory Civil Engineer in Lemont, Illinois
Argonne National Laboratory is searching for a Civil Engineer to join its Facilities team within the Infrastructure Services Directorate. The primary roles will be that of a Site Civil Engineer and Building Facilities Engineer. This role includes responsibility for underground utility piping, roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and storm sewer systems. Other roles include providing architectural support for buildings and structural support for foundations, equipment supports, and structural assessments of existing conditions.
A successful candidate will excel in working with a multi-disciplinary, fast pace team and will interact with staff including Facilities Engineers, Maintenance and Utilities Foreman/Mechanics, Project Managers, and Project Specialists. Considerable independence and judgment will be exercised in planning and carrying out assignments.
Performs on-site inspections and condition assessments of facilities and infrastructure.
Prepares cost estimates for design, equipment, installation, labor, materials, and other related costs.
Gathers and reviews data concerning facility or equipment specifications, codes or government requirements, and construction feasibility.
Reviews civil engineering plans, specifications, and contracts for various construction projects.
Meets and works with engineering consultants, contractors, Lab management and other personnel.
Recommends technical engineering designs and solutions and prepares concept and detail drawings.
Maintains effective communication with building users, contractors, and other project team members.
Establishes courses of action for self and others to ensure that work is completed efficiently.
Achieves greater results by working together across boundaries, actively sharing information, and promoting the core values of the Lab: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity and Teamwork.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Strong knowledge of and experience in civil engineering including underground piping, storm sewer systems, parking lots, roads, and sidewalks.
Strong knowledge of and experience with civil engineering principles, practices, codes, and standards.
Understanding of operations and construction safety standards.
Experience with methods and techniques used in the design, construction, and inspection of municipal infrastructure.
Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing; assists in the preparation of technical reports and papers; listens to and understands instructions, and requests clarification as required.
Strong organization and project management skills.
Demonstrated ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and to achieve desired goals on schedule and within budget.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer is highly preferred.
