About the Role

Barry Callebaut (BC) has positioned itself as a strong innovator in cocoa and chocolate products. Being one of the company’s strategic pillars, innovation contributes to attracting and retaining customers and supporting our company’s SMART growth strategy developing margin accretive new product innovations to increase our EBIT.

The objective of the function is focused on contributing to On Time In Full delivery of innovation projects from idea or concept until ready for market launch.

The Global R&D Technologist is closely working together with Global R&D Project Managers, experts, quality department, sourcing, and supply chain departments. He/She participates in one or more technical work streams in confidential projects and assists his/her line manager in activities of high strategic importance. He/She is responsible for the execution of the technical tasks, setting up experimental and pilot trials, doing feasibility tests, organizing and following up shelf-life tests, and requesting laboratory and sensory analyses. He/She uses the appropriate evaluation methods available within the company and makes study plans to demonstrate the ingredient, material, or process benefits of its final product. He/She translates the test results into functional specifications. He/She aligns on study design, test protocol, and reporting on results with the line manager and defines the next development steps with the project team. The experimental work can happen in-house or through a 3rd party research collaboration.

The Global R&D Technologist gets guidance and support from the Global R&D Manager, especially on more complex activities, ad hoc requests, and issues in the execution of his duties. The Global R&D Manager takes the responsibility to regularly monitor compliance in the execution of the project managers’ duties.

Key Responsibilities Include

Inside BC

  • Contribute to Global R&D innovation projects by technical information creation and reporting on the results

  • Responsible for the field/lab work to generate data in collaboration with the teams in the application lab and pilot plant

  • Responsible for collecting/creating the quality documentation linked to introducing new raw materials on site (for further testing and evaluation)

  • Using appropriate evaluation methods, in line with the company’s standards and food safety rules.

  • System set-up and creation of new ingredients within the company and follow-up with sourcing, quality, MIT teams

  • Substantiate studies with sound analytical data, and identify appropriate methods or external labs where needed (with the involvement of line manager) in alignment with the Quality Assurance department.

  • Collaboration with internal and external analytical labs. Generate lab requests and follow up on the results.

  • Prepare samples and organize sample requests, shipments, and other associated administrative tasks.

  • Keep track of the generated samples and analytical data

  • Presentation, reporting, and communication on generated insight.

    Outside BC

  • Supporting the execution of feasibility trials for applications or technologies not available within BC (research institutes, co-manufacturers).

  • Organize the shipment of the materials for external trials

  • Contact person for external partners regarding quality requirements and documentation.

  • Be informed and respect 3rd party partnership agreements and conditions and manage administrative tasks together with the Procurement department

    About You

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Science or Engineering discipline, preferably with some experience in the Food Industry (internship, thesis,…)

  • Knowledgeable in MS Office

  • Fluent in Business English + any other language

  • Competences in Google Apps, Excel, and Salesforce are a plus

  • Good communication skills.
