Job Description

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director will lead a team of content writers and strategists who are responsible for developing and applying content family physicians need to provide high quality, comprehensive patient care. The Content Director is a collaborative, creative leader with experience creating content for a variety of channels. They are comfortable asking questions, exploring new opportunities, and connecting dots across the organization and across content areas to maximize the effectiveness of information and resources. They see value in and practice the COPE method: Create Once, Publish Everywhere-repurposing content with appropriate modification for use across channels to reach various segments.

Key responsibilities include:

Develops and implements a comprehensive content strategy that aligns with the organization’s strategic plan and reflects the AAFP brand. Facilitates the development and use of content in accordance with the content strategy.

Leads, manages and mentors a diverse team of content strategist, writers, editors and managers. Assesses and builds skills to respond to emerging channels and changing content needs. Coaches team members for performance.

Continuously improves content through audits, measurement, optimization and process improvements. Ensures effective content governance is in place to facilitate content strategy, content creation and continuous improvement. Tracks reader response and trends in the larger world, forecasts and interprets what these trends will mean for the organization.

Cultivates and maintains strong, collaborative relationships with internal teams and colleagues. Leads communication planning and execution on key projects that have broad member impact.

Drives organizational revenue by delivering member value and thereby member retention through content. Builds a results-oriented culture in the core content and content strategy team, encouraging ownership for membership and organizational health among team members.

REQUIREMENTS:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related area (or through equivalent work experience), plus a minimum of six to ten years related work experience.

Required skills for success include:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills consistent with communications and consulting role, including persuasion and thought leadership.

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience developing and presenting recommendations for content assets and communications across multiple channels in support of strategic objectives.

  • Publishing experience in digital channels, including principles of information architecture, componentized content management systems, syndication, and SEO best practices.

  • Project management, relationship management, time management.

  • Message and user journey mapping. Demonstrated success developing editorial plans, messaging and key messages, and content strategy frameworks.
