The Lawrenceville School seeks a School Chaplain for full time, 10-month employment starting July 1, 2023. The Chaplain reports directly to the Dean of Students and is charged with fostering religious life on campus in line with Lawrenceville’s mission and strategic vision. We are seeking spiritual, enthusiastic, energetic, collegial individuals who want to work with both adults and students in a collaborative and inclusive academic setting.
Religious Life
Keep Religious Life visible and vibrant and relevant for our school community
Work closely with the Director of Religious Life to:
Strengthen and deepen the student Religious Life Council
Work with the Director of Religious Life to support the student Explorations Council
Contribute thoughtfully and proactively to the community conversation regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. Promote diversity of religious and cultural traditions as part of what makes Lawrenceville rich in both learning and experience
Oversee and support the Religious Life Leaders beginning with the annual letters of agreement for the adjunct leaders. There are currently nine Religious Life leaders for the 2022-23 school year
Manage expenses and budget for School Chaplain, Religious Life Leaders, Religious Life Council, Explorations and related activities
Connect to Chaplaincies at other schools and participate in MAPL, 8 Schools and other professional gatherings
Pastoral Presence
Be a consistent and attentive pastoral presence to members of our school community by reaching out especially to those who are in a crisis
Perform weddings, funerals, memorial services, and other rites of passage for current and emeritus faculty, staff, students, and alumni
Create and officiate at "Solemn Assemblies," such as the annual assembly for 9/11 as well as at vigils that happen after a national or international crises
Work closely with students and those involved to offer community events
Pastoral presence for students who have made mistakes in judgment or are separated from the school
Pastoral presence for faculty and staff who have made mistakes in judgment or in the midst of a crisis of one sort or another
Steward of the Edith Memorial Chapel
Keep the Edith Memorial Chapel a welcoming space
Meet regularly with the School Organist to cultivate the welcoming space among other responsibilities write annual letter of agreement for School Organist
Administer and oversee maintenance work on the organ, piano and the carillon
Organize and support carillonneurs when appropriate
Work regularly with Buildings and Grounds personnel
Manage budget and funds available for the chapel
Officiate and Pray at School Functions
Officiate at Baccalaureate
Officiate at In Memoriam
Officiate at Installation
Prayers at Convocation and Commencement
Prayer Poems for Dedications and House Gatherings
Coordinate music, programming, and participants for services, working with musicians, readers, and all involved for the above events
Teaching and Residential Life
Teach 2 classes in the Religion and Philosophy Department
Advise five to eight students, and do one evening a week of “House duty,” providing supervision in a student residence from 7-11:30 pm
Appropriate background in theological studies
Deep experience leading congregations and a commitment to working with young people
Ordained clergy member in a particular faith
Experience in schools and/or leading worship for young people
Teaching experience in high school or college
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse religious populations
