Summary The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Gastroenterology is accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assume responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) - Gastroenterology considers all characteristics of the individual including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs. Major duties include but not limited to: Coordinates and facilitates GI endoscopic care working side-by-side with the Gastroenterologists in GI services. Functions as an active member of the Gastroenterology section within the Department of Medicine. Provides general GI services in keeping with good clinical practice and standards of the Gastroenterology section of the Medicine service at the Southern Nevada VA Health Care System. Maintains APP licensing and credentialing in good standing. Be in compliance with the Medical Staff bylaws and will complete all assigned notes, encounters and chart reviews timely. Acts as a liaison between appropriate subspecialty providers, case managers and primary care for patients in need of endoscopic procedures. Coordinates post-procedure care by acting as a liaison between the appropriate sub- specialty and primary care providers. Manages and coordinates tests, labs, imaging, procedure, consultations, and travel documents as needed for the pre and post procedure care of patients. Facilitates Direct Access Colonoscopy procedures and completing consents for procedures you are involved with while working with the MDs. Prepares patient for their endoscopic procedures. Performs histories and physicals on patients as needed and appropriately document all findings in the electronic medical records. Arranges paracentesis for patients with liver disease that need it on a regular basis. Arranges phlebotomy for patients that need it on a regular basis in liaison wit providers. Facilitates Acute hospital transfer of patients from the ED and inpatient care for urgent endoscopic procedures. Other duties may be assigned. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. RN Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. AND must meet Nurse Practitioner Requirements: APRN/NP Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional Nurse Practitioner in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Nurse Practitioners Education and Certification: Must possess a master's or doctoral degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected. Preferred Experience: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) provider card issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN). Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider care by American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN). Prescriptive privilege (Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number) with a Drug Enforcement administration (DEA) number from the United States Drug Enforcement administration for Schedule II-V controlled substances with demonstration of meeting State Board of Nursing requirements to prescribe controlled substances. 2-3 years specialized experience in Gastroenterology. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Physical Requirements: This position requires heavy lifting, 45 pounds heavy carrying, 45 pounds straight pulling (2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking & standing 8 hours - intermittently; repeated bending; both legs required; ability for rapid mental& muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aide permitted). Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
