Classification Summary: Under general supervision, responsible for protecting organization premises and property. On a routine basis, inspects grounds to ensure security requirements are met. Controls and monitors access to buildings. May be required to enforce parking regulations and report fire and safety hazards. Reports atypical situations to management. May use electronic surveillance equipment. Requires the ability toreact quickly in sensitive situations. Frequently reports to a security supervisor or a security manager.

Classification Standard Duties: React to lethal force threats. Control access to areas. Escort individuals to/from campus locations when there are indications of potential lethal violence, to include escorting employees transporting currency standby during potentially disruptive situations. Remove individuals from areas (without use of force unless immediate danger to self or others). Crowd management. Traffic control in parking lots or on streets within the campus at direction of a police officer. Assist police officers in the detention and monitoring of criminal suspects. Respond to and evaluate duress alarms. Warn individuals regarding prohibited conduct. Conduct consensual searches of bags and persons, to include use of metal detectors. Secure crime scenes. Provide first aid/CPR during medical emergencies. Identify and report unsafe conditions, to include fires, facility damage, inoperable safety equipment, etc. Activate alarm(s) as necessary. Prepare and submit standardized reports. Patrol through designated areas (inside and/or outside; on foot or with a vehicle). Check/verify buildings are secure. Observe and report suspicious behavior. Assist in facility evacuations. Monitor or review video camera footage (no administrative rights). Request assistance from police and/or higher level security personnel. Provide information to individuals (e.g., directions, general campus information, etc.). Safely operate motor vehicles, to include providing rides to students, employees, or visitors. Lock doors and arm alarm systems as needed. Perform miscellaneous security-related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of federal, state, and local traffic laws and regulations governing the operation of a commercial passenger vehicle.; SKILLS:Skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus; Skill i utilizing security equipment and systems.; ABILITIES:Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports; Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures; Ability to drive motor vehicles; Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel; Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.

Job Duties and Responsibilities Provides a uniformed presence to protect property and maintain a high visibility presence to deter illegal activity. Communicates directly with law enforcement officials as well as the public in addressing safety or security concerns. Warns persons of rule infractions or violations, and detain or evicts violators from premises, using force, when necessary, as per policy, in an effort to safeguard our community. Monitors and authorizes entrance of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises. Completes incident reports for equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences based upon their specific assignment/job function. Monitors security detecting devices or surveillance equipment in order to screen individuals and prevent passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas. Assists with emergency evacuations of facilities. Conducts protective sweeps of assigned areas. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Position may be required to perform the following duties on an as needed basis: Security officers can be utilized to work NMSU special events such as sporting events, concerts, and campus activities that require a security presence; and/or sight/building security for any assigned location associated with the university system. They may be required to conduct and assist in security monitoring; building or secured area access control; surveillance monitoring; campus/sight security associated with NMSU/DACC/PSL throughout the State of NM; conducting screening measures at building/sight entrances; alcohol monitoring at events; assist with traffic escorts; event control over watch; assist police officers with traffic control at events and at crash sites; and crowd control management depending upon their specific assignment/job function within the university system.

Preferred Qualifications

Former police or security service in good standing. Familiarity with use of firearms. Physically fit and able to pass a basic police service agility test, able to stand for long periods of time, walk for long periods of time, lift 50 pounds from the floor to above your head.

Special Requirements of the Position Must be legally able and willing to handle firearms. Must never have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving domestic violence per New Mexico State Statute 30-7-16. Must submit to and pass an in depth and rigorous background investigation prior to start date. Must complete Security Officer level I, II and III training within six months of hire/start date.
