Nature of Work

Performs maintenance and repair of various diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Most work is completed outdoors in all weather conditions; exposure to vehicle fumes, dirt, odors, dust, grease and vehicle fluids; subject to cuts, bruises, electrical system shocks, burns and strains; may be exposed to dog bits and traffic hazards when operating heavy equipment.

PHYSICAL FACTORS

Heavy physical work involving bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, kneeling and squatting; ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds; ability to move around the maintenance area; ability to enter/exit vehicles.

WORK SITUATION FACTORS

Must furnish own hand tools to perform work; requires shift work and working alone with occasional overtime. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policy. Release of Information Form (49 CFR Part 40) required.

This recruitment will be used to fill a Fleet Technician I position in the Fleet Department but may be used to fill other Fleet Technician I vacancies within the various maintenance shops.

This position is graded as a BC10.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs maintenance, repairs and major overhauls on a variety of diesel-powered and gasoline-powered equipment in order to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the fleet.

• Performs computer and manual diagnostic assessments of mechanical, electrical and body

problems.

• Conducts research using manuals and other sources.

• Conducts vehicle safety inspections; provides preventive maintenance; checks fluid levels; checks/adjusts brakes; changes oil; checks and services batteries and charging systems; checks and services cooling systems; lubricates vehicles and equipment.

• Performs repairs on hoses, vehicles, tire changes and related activities.

• Examines vehicle parts for defects and excessive wear

• Maintains HVAC and complex electrical systems.

• Maintains ADA accessible wheelchair lifts and ramps to assure operability in customer service.

• Performs preventive maintenance and vehicle safety inspection tasks in accordance with

established schedules in order to assure FTA compliance with grant requirements.

• Performs overhauls of engines, transmissions and related components.

• Performs fabrication of parts for vehicles and equipment.

• Inspects defective equipment; diagnoses malfunctions using manuals and hand tools.

• Coordinates major repairs with the maintenance shop; maintains a regular repair schedule; maintains records of work activities.

• Works with the other maintenance shops to track vehicle maintenance and operations costs.

• Tests repaired, tuned, and overhauled vehicles/equipment.

• Performs field service calls to repair equipment or vehicles; transports equipment to and from the maintenance shop; delivers fuel to equipment.

• Maintains accurate daily and special records of all materials used and time spent in performance of vehicle maintenance for costing and inventory records and coordinates with staff on repairs.

• Responds to calls for emergency maintenance at all hours of operation.

• Maintains tools and working area in a clean and safe condition at all times.

• Uses standard shop safety practices as per local, state and OSHA requirements.

• Attends all training classes required by the Section.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate of Applied Science in Automotive or Diesel Technology (Associate of Applied Sciences Master Technology desirable) and six (6) years of experience, including two (2) most recent years of heavy equipment experience, as an automotive mechanic in a professional shop. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

Valid New Mexico Class B Commercial Driver's License with a passenger (P) and air brake endorsements (must be obtained within two months of hire date). A valid Class A commercial driver's license, Tanker, Hazardous Materials, or other endorsements may be required within 11 months of hire based on job placement. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies. ASE Master Certification is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of:Gasoline and diesel diagnostic procedures and methods; operational characteristics of light and heavy automotive and motorized equipment; operations and care of internal combustion engines; preventive maintenance procedures regarding light and heavy vehicles and motorized equipment; methods and techniques of performing diagnostic and troubleshooting services; methods and materials used in welding and fabrication.

Ability to:Use standard repair tools and equipment; use a personal computer and various software applications; perform technical reading and writing; maintain written records; establish effective working relationships.

Skills in:Equipment and tool use.
