Trinity Health Lactation Consultant RN, Tier III Pool in Langhorne, Pennsylvania

Required: BSN, PA RN License, AHA BLS, IBCLC Certification

Tier III Requirements: 96 hour minimum commitment per 4 week schedule, 3 weekend shifts per 4 week schedule, 1 Winter Holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's), 1 Spring/Summer Holiday (Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day)

  • Is an expert in the breastfeeding process. Is knowledgeable with antepartum, intrapartum and post partum health care and psychosocial issues. Is knowledgeable of premature infants, newborns and toddlers nutritional needs.

  • Utilizes educational strategies to provide individual, family and group counseling, guidance and health promotion instructions to assist patients and family members to participate in their health care plan and maintain good health habits and prevention activities.

  • Assumes a lead role in coordinating and providing evidence-based inpatient and outpatient clinical services for the Infant Nutrition and Lactation Program.

  • Provides clinical assessment of the family breastfeeding relationship.

  • Analyzes the assessment information; identifies concerns, problems and goals; and develops plan of care.

  • Implements therapeutic interventions for simple and complex lactation needs.

  • Problem solves and intervenes to prevent potentially serious clinical situations.

  • Evaluates outcomes and modifies plan of care.

  • Assumes leadership role in all aspects of a comprehensive lactation program including the breast pump leasing program; retail store; employee breastfeeding support programs and telephone support.

  • Assists and provides support to patients as necessary in obtaining needed services. Coordinates patient referrals to the support services provided.

  • Prioritizes and organizes work assignment and adjusts priorities based on changing situations. Plans delivery of care according to patient acuity and changing census

  • Consults with interdisciplinary team members: physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, dietitians, speech therapists, and social workers to achieve the best nutritional clinical outcomes.

  • Provides antepartum, intrapartum and post partum classes on breastfeeding, breast care and related topics to inpatients, outpatients and nursing staff. Establishes reviews and updates educational content on a variety of medications and maternal and infant conditions to include cleft palate, cleft lip, micro-premies, etc. Is knowledgeable of pharmaceuticals and the effects on lactation.

  • Performs and documents comprehensive nutrition and breastfeeding assessments and plans of care based on patients’ and clients’ needs. Recognizes and integrates patient special needs and individualizes care.

  • Conducts annual audits to determine breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates and the effects of change in protocols.
