The Hartford Underwriter Associate- Commercial Surety Bond in Lake Mary, Florida

The ideal candidate will be located on the East Coast. This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of our office locations (Lake Mary, FL) will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

The Commercial Surety Bond Underwriter Associate serves as a critical business partner to the underwriting teams within the National Surety Office. This role acts an extension of Underwriting, to provide new business and renewal support in a fast-paced, high volume business environment. You will be a part of a service team, collaborating to provide world-class support and use a very strong level of Surety, industry, and market knowledge to contribute to the overall success and profitability of the Bond organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible, within the scope of his/her team assignments, for the maintenance of an operating environment in which Hartford Bond service objectives may be attained through conformity to established underwriting and service standards, compliance with administrative policies and procedures and the application of proper workflows and workload balance.

  • Displays a degree of Commercial Surety Bond knowledge, risk analysis, and underwriting skills sufficient to handle simple underwriting cases within the limited authority provided.

  • Provides a level of underwriting support in gathering data necessary, internet research, interfacing with agent and customer, HO to ensure all information is current and accurate

  • Becomes proficient as a screener of incoming business requests in adherence to Bond underwriting and business appetite.

  • Maintains productive working relationships with Regional Office, agents, clients, and other beneficiaries to promote our service model and provide support.

  • Demonstrates ability to be calm and think clearly in stressful situations. Must possess a high degree of patience to effectively work with a diverse, often unknowledgeable set of customers unfamiliar with The Hartford or industry processes and requirements.

  • Over time, establishes self as the main point of contact for business and information flow within the assigned territory.

  • Works independently to proactively maintain timeliness of information in the underwriting files.

  • Runs reports in support of underwriting portfolio management.

  • Identifies and assists in solving various problems.

  • Strong teamwork required to provide effective backup support for other Underwriting Associates, Underwriters or Bond Service Specialists, as needed. Routes information to and from underwriting teams in the absence of local underwriter.

  • Serves on various process improvement committees as needed to improve the bond underwriting and service organizations.

  • Other various projects as determined by service and/or underwriting staff.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years business experience, in the Surety Bond industry at either a company or agency required.

  • Minimum 2 year College degree preferred or equivalent business experience in Surety Bonds

  • AFSB or NASBP Training. Analytical, business, finance, or accounting support experience preferred

  • Strong Technology and PC skills, general comfort with technology and ability to learn software systems

  • General analytical and math skills; requires basic understanding of Financial Statements and calculation of rate/premium

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Critical thinking: Proactively identify and anticipate needs. Quick learner. Solves problems by gathering and using different sources of information. Business acumen. Attention to detail-error free work

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Self-Starter: Demonstrates initiative and motivation, Assertive, Able to work independently, Not afraid to ask questions or have challenging conversations

  • Excellent time management skills; the ability to work under time constraints and meet deadlines, multi-task and prioritize workload, working in a high volume environment

  • Ability to embrace and implement new change

  • Ability to work east coast hours

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$65,200 - $97,800
