  • MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1: Class D, Chauffeurs License will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-1 is $16.06/hourly; this job title receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.

  • MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 2: Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-2 is $17.18/hourly; this job title receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.

    The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in DISTRICT 07/Unit 777 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to HIGHWAY FOREMAN 2. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service Laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

    25% Equipment Operation

    Operates the following heavy equipment, as needed:

  • Asphalt Distributor (truck mounted)

  • Backhoes

  • Front end loaders

  • Bucket/ladder trucks

  • Cranes/draglines (lifting capacity >20,000 lbs but <40,000 lbs

  • Dozers (<140 HP)

  • Dump truck (tandem axle or trailer dump)

  • Gradalls

  • Hot mix pavers (<40 HP)

  • Motor Grader

  • Skid Steer with attachments

  • Lowboys

  • Milling machines (<90 HP)

  • Road planer

  • Road widener (<90 HP)

  • Sewer Cleaners (truck mounted)

  • Striping machines

  • Sweepers

  • Track hoes (excavators)

  • Tractors with boom mower or sprayer

  • Herbicide truck

  • Stump grinder & chipper

  • Under bridge inspection units (trailer mounted)

    25% General Maintenance:Perform duties as directed, such as tree trimming & removal, herbicide application, shoveling asphalt, digging footings for setting concrete forms, placing traffic control devices, delivering, loading and unloading materials and/or equipment, flagging traffic, operating power and/or hand tools, etc. May perform incidental repair and construction tasks such as installation of guardrail, fencing, pipe, catch basins, and drainage structures. Keeps records as required by supervisor, which may include, petty cash tickets, requisitions, inventory, daily work reports, etc. May train and/or assist in training lower level operators or laborers. May be required to perform a wide variety of assigned duties and tasks necessary to accomplish the overall mission of the gang or section. Shall be responsible to respond to call-outs after normal working hours, in all types of weather conditions, such as removing falling trees from the roadway, applying deicing materials, responding to traffic accidents, and draining water from the roadway.

    30% Debris Removal:Patrol the Interstate Highway System and some US Highways within the district removing debris, litter, animal carcasses, and other items from the DOTD Right-of-Way including the roadway. This position will require the incumbent to periodically assist to and ensure the safety of the traveling public.

    15% Miscellaneous:perform miscellaneous tasks as directed by the supervisor or higher-ranking personnel. Prior to equipment operations, conducts routine visual/physical safety inspection of equipment, reports Problems to supervisor/appropriate personnel and/or takes necessary corrective action whenever possible. Performs minor repairs, services, preventative maintenance, and cleans equipment in accordance with Operator’s manual and manufacture’s recommendations to keep equipment operating efficiently and safely. Prepares any necessary paperwork (e.g., mileage, oi/gas usage, etc.) as directed.

    5%Other Duties:May be required to perform other duties and training as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
