Full Job Description

Responsible to: Principal

Job Summary:

The Intensive Treatment Program (ITP) will include working with adolescents, typically 12 – 18 years old that are diagnosed on the Autism spectrum with mental health concerns and developmental or intellectual disabilities. The Special Education Teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with Autism, Intellectual Disability, and/or mental illness in a variety of educational settings. The person in this position is responsible for creation and oversight of an instructional environment utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis methodology.

Essential job duties:

  1. Creates an educational climate that promotes success, independence, a productive atmosphere, and provides students with encouragement, safety and stimulation.

  2. Completes weekly lesson plans based on a developmentally appropriate curriculum which follows the New York State Education Department Learning Standards.

  3. Creates an Individual Education Plan (IEP) utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis protocols to establish goals and objectives.

  4. Prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of students based upon their IEP.

  5. Create activity schedules, daily schedules, as appropriate.

  6. Supervises Special Education Technicians in the delivery of Discrete Trial Training, Verbal Behavior Intervention, Pivotal Response Training, etc.

  7. Demonstrate adequate knowledge of: subject matter, ability to think critically, and individualized instruction.

  8. Implement and monitor effectiveness of behavior management plans in collaboration with Behavior Technicians, Special Education Technicians, BCBA, BCaBA.

  9. Act as leader of classroom staff including assistants, therapists, and social workers.

  10. Conduct regular team meetings and participate in multidisciplinary meetings, as required.

  11. Complete log notes based on student goals as per the IEP (progress and/or regression).

  12. Complete Quarterly Progress Reports on all students that are distributed to parents and other providers, as appropriate.

  13. Complete Annual Review Reports/Amendments/Regression Statements (including writing appropriate observable and measurable child centered goals).

  14. Participate in and share appropriate information at CSE meetings, treatment team meetings, etc.

  15. Upon discharge of student from program, provide receiving providers with copies of behavior plans, communication boards, CD of materials that include any programs the youth is working on, description and pictures of sensory breaks, daily schedule, social skills materials, PECS binder/board template, IEP, discharge summary.

  16. Mentor and train new teachers as requested by supervisor.

  17. Maintain client confidentiality within HIPPA/FERPA and agency guidelines.

Skills:

• Computer skills

• Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis methodologies

• Knowledge of use of Alternative and Augmentative Communication Devices

Minimum Education:

Bachelor`s Degree in Education, Master’s Degree preferred

Experience:

Minimum Experience: 3-5 years’ experience with individuals with developmental disabilities. Previous working experience working with Autistic clients preferred, but not required.

Required License/Registration/ Certification:

New York State Teacher Certification: Students with Disabilities

OR- currently enrolled in a teacher preparation program leading to NYS certification

Training:

• Continuing education as per NYS Office of Profession guidelines

• All required agency trainings (including Applied Behavior Analysis, SCIP-R)

• All trainings required by programs in which you service individuals

Physical Requirements:

• The frequent physical demands of the position are standing, walking, climbing, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and eye/hand/foot coordination.

• The occasional physical demands of the position are lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling.
