Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) is assigned to a rural community and works independently to provide a wide array of public safety services which include, but are not limited to, law enforcement, crime prevention, fire suppression and education, emergency medical service, search and rescue services, and may participate in community activities. A VPSO may also be designated a Roving VPSO by the VPSO Coordinator. A Roving VPSO performs all of the essential duties and responsibilities of a VPSO and may be temporarily assigned to a village other than their assigned village for up to 30 days to deliver public safety services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include

, but are not limited to the following:

• Upholds KANAs Code of Ethics by conducting professional activities with honesty, integrity, respect, fairness, and good faith in a manner that reflects positively upon the organization.
• Patrols assigned village by foot, motor vehicle, off-road vehicle, small boat, fixed or rotary wing aircraft.
• Required to travel by small boat, fixed or rotary wing aircraft for work related reasons .
• Temporary assignment to a village other than assigned village up to 30 days per instance to deliver public safety services.
• Responds to routine and emergency calls for service, to include in progress crimes.
• Enforces federal, state municipal and tribal laws and ordinances.
• Responds to animal complaints;
• Investigates reports of crime; makes arrests; writes reports, and provides testimony in civil, criminal and tribal court proceedings and trials in support of arrest and reports.
• Responds to fires and coordinates fire prevention and fire protection services.
• Responds to medical emergencies and assists the Community Health Aide as requested.
• Participates in community emergency management planning, mitigation and response activities for natural and man-caused events.
• Activates the village siren alert warning system (SAWS) for function test and to notify village of emergencies
• Assist the Department of Corrections by monitoring and reporting on persons on probation or parole who reside in the village, and with collecting urine samples to ensure compliance with conditions of probation or parole.
• Assist the Alaska Court System by monitoring and reporting on the status of community work service assignments taking place in the village.
• Assist the Alaska State Troopers (AST) with monitoring registered sex offenders who reside in the village.
• Attends City/Village Council meetings to deliver reports on public safety matters occurring in the village.
• Maintains regular contact with the VPSO Coordinator and AST at least weekly, or more frequently as necessary.
• Notifies the VPSO Coordinator of incidents warranting counseling from AST.
• Makes and submits activity reports, dispatch cards, time cards and other information to the VPSO Coordinator as requested.
• Attends training as required by the VPSO Coordinator.
• Participates in community based initiatives, as directed by the VPSO Coordinator, e.g. Choose Respect, Alutiiq cultural week, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), hunter safety education, Kids Dont Float, etc.
• May be required to guard people who are detained or under arrest and/or transport them to the nearest jail.
• Works an assigned shift but may be required to work beyond the assigned shift, respond after hours, or on weekends and holidays .

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job has no KANA supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements: Must be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien who has demonstrated an intent to become a itizen of the United States; must be 21 years of age at time of application; must be of good moral character; must have a high school diploma, or its equivalent, or have passed a General Educational Development (GED) tests; must be free from any physical or hearing condition that would adversely affect performance of an essential function of the VPSO ; must have normal color discrimination, normal binocular coordination, normal peripheral vision, and corrected visual acuity of 20/30 or better in each eye; must be free from a mental or emotional condition that would adversely affect performance of an essential function of a VPSO; must meet all of the requirements of the Department of Public Safety, to include successful completion of the VPSO Physical Fitness Test, and KANA, to be hired for the position of VPSO.
