Lake Metroparks Wildlife Education Manager in Kirtland, Ohio

*Rate: *Pay Grade: E -- $22.0870 hour/$45,941 annual to $34.7084 hour/$72,194 annual -- minimum starting salary based on prior experience and education

Location: Penitentiary Glen Reservation, Kirtland, OH 44094

*Position Description: *

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Outdoor Connections, the Wildlife Education Manager cooperatively supervises Wildlife Center operations to assure its mission as a full service, state of the art rehabilitation and education program. Develops educational and interpretive programs relating to wildlife and wildlife conservation issues, develops curriculum for wildlife programs for schools and public programming, develops interpretive tools such as brochures and signage, and provides other visitor services as required. Responsible for training of permanent animal ambassadors along with assisting in cleaning, feeding, and providing daily enrichment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees the development, implementation, scheduling and evaluation of educational and interpretive programs for schools, children and families of all ages.
  • Develops on-site interpretive tools such as brochures, newsletters, exhibits, displays and other visitor service needs.
  • Directs and manages Wildlife Education part-time and seasonal staff.
  • Assists Wildlife Care Manager with volunteers and interns at the center.
  • Cooperatively evaluates the need and facilitates replacements of permanent resident/educational animals.
  • Supervises and implements ongoing care, enrichment and training of resident/education animals.
  • Develops and coordinates special events.
  • Writes and edits programs and articles for Parks Plus.
  • Compiles monthly and annual reports.
  • Tracks education stats for State and Federal permits.
  • Researches environmental issues, new methods of interpretation, rehabilitation and wildlife education; maintains updated knowledge of professional trends.
  • Maintains inventory and oversees purchase of educational supplies.
  • Assists with animal care and rehabilitation protocols as able.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

*Minimum Qualifications: *

  • Bachelor's degree in zoology, biology, wildlife management, or related field preferred.
  • 1-2 years of wildlife care or education experience required.
  • 1-2 years supervisory experience preferred.

*Position Requirements: *

Knowledge of native Ohio wildlife, including endangered species and wildlife management issues.

Knowledge of wildlife medicine.

Knowledge of wildlife laws and regulations.

Knowledge of working with the public.

Excellent presentation and verbal & written communication skills.

Must be comfortable speaking in public in front of small and large groups.

Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with families and children of all ages.

Must be self-motivated, self-directed, flexible, creative, able to perform with poise under pressure and to deliver strong and measurable results.

Must possess strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to manage all types of employees.

Ability to stimulate interest and excitement about program subject and the park district in visitors and other staff.

Ability to be creative, flexible, well organized, energetic, and to relate to the public.

Ability to interact with others with tact and courtesy and maintain integrity and appropriate behavior in dealing with conflicts and challenges with the public, co-workers, and managers.
