Description

Astronics Advanced Electronic Systems (AES) is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to serve as a leader with our team of diverse, professional problem solvers in our Ballard Technologies Product Group in Everett, WA .

This is an on-site position that offers flexibility to work from home 2-3 days per week and necessitates willingness to come into the Everett and Kirkland facilities as needed.

JOB SUMMARY

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will represent the Astronics Ballard Technology Product Group for all mechanical design needs. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will:

  • Design and analyze mechanical systems, equipment, and packaging.

  • Be responsible for the initial planning, design, analysis, and documentation of moderately to highly complex designs.

  • Support new product development and sustaining projects while providing rapid responses to customer requests.

  • Achieve robust designs to ensure long product life.

  • Lead and guide in the correction of complex mechanical product design issues as well as integration testing and verification activities.

  • Conduct technology exploration and influence applications within the business.

  • Plan and consistently achieve program milestones within timeline, cost, and quality targets.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Design

  • Evaluates program requirements and the Electrical Engineer’s circuit design to develop successful design solutions

  • Communicates with vendors to support initial fabrication of complicated components

  • Experienced with multiple fabrication techniques (i.e. machined, formed sheet metal, and injection molding)

  • Involved in design reviews, both as a presenter and reviewer

  • Directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication.

  • May be the sole mechanical engineer on a product development from concept design to customer delivery

Analysis

  • Utilizes engineering analysis to inform and validate design approach

  • Performs vibration analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software tools

Testing

  • Knowledgeable in the environmental requirements defined by RTCA DO-160

  • Evaluates test results against pass/fail criteria

  • Performs root cause analysis of product test failures and successfully deploys corrective actions to the product design

  • Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs

Design Documentation

  • Identifies improvements to technical documentation practices and works with drafting to make continuous improvements related to accuracy and efficiency

  • Provides design information to drafting for packaging documentation

  • Responsive to Marketing requests for customer literature

Proposals

  • May be involved in providing inputs to the product proposals (cost, preliminary design input, etc.)

Project Leadership

  • Assist with planning schedules, cost targets, pursues cost reductions to meet project goals at CCB level

Product Support

  • Support Root Cause Analysis on identified product failures

  • Develop or modify assembly fixtures to support production

  • Support obsolescence activities

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution is required (Mechanical Engineering is preferred)

Experience:

  • Demonstrates competency (typically 5+ years of direct experience in the essential functions of the position)

  • Proficient in the use of SolidWorks to create complex electronics enclosures

  • Proficient in detailing drawings in SolidWorks

  • Proficient in cooling techniques for electronic equipment

  • Proficient in designing for machined metal and sheet metal

  • Proficient in DO-160 Environmental requirements and testing

  • Thermal Analysis / CFD using Solidworks Flow Simulation

  • Familiarity with printed circuit board layout and packaging

  • Familiarity with FDM 3D Printing

  • Familiarity with injection molded plastics design

  • Excellent collaboration/teamwork skills

  • Creative problem solving

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a US Person (under ITAR rules) to be eligible

  • An offer of employment is contingent on successfully passing a drug test and background check.

Base salary range is $94,208 - $141,313 per year. Several job-related and non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to experience in comparable roles, skill sets, training, education, licensure or certifications, other qualifications, market conditions and business needs influence actual salary offered.
