ASSISTANT PORT OPERATIONS COORDINATOR

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general direction, assists with overseeing and coordinating port operations and activities within the Port and Harbors Department; supports the maintenance and security of the City of Ketchikan port dock; assists in ensuring compliance with the Facility Security Plan; and provides information and assistance on Department functions and services to the maritime industry and the boating public. The Assistant Port Operations Coordinator helps ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the Citys marine facilities. Working under the direction of the Port Operations Coordinator, this role involves assisting with the coordination and performance of port operations and activities, including acting as a secondary Facility Security Officer as needed. The Assistant Port Operations Coordinator must be capable of responding to emergency situations both during and after work hours and assisting in the repair and maintenance of the port, harbor, and Department structures and equipment. The Assistant Port Operations Coordinator provides support and information to vessels of the maritime industry, as well as commercial and recreational boat operators, regarding port and harbor activities, rules, and regulations. These duties must be performed in a manner that reflects positively on the City and the Department.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices
Assists with coordinating port operations and activities, including supporting port security personnel and crossing guards; assists in training and scheduling staff as needed.
Supports the Port Operations Coordinator in performing security duties at the Port, including acting as an alternate Facility Security Officer when directed; monitors cruise ship arrivals and departures and assists in ensuring overall safety of the port, passengers, and the general public.
Assists with patrolling city-owned port docks, floats, and waterfront facilities, reports maintenance needs and safety concerns.
Helps maintain compliance with the Facility Security Plan and supports updates to the plan as directed.
Provides support and information to maritime industry professionals and boat operators regarding port and harbor rules, regulations, and space availability.
Assists with responding to emergency, hazardous, or complicated situations at the port and/or harbors.
Helps ensure public facilities are opened and closed as scheduled; assists in monitoring janitorial services and contractor performance.
Performs basic maintenance tasks for Port and Harbors Department structures and equipment, including general clean-up and minor repairs.
Operates maintenance equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner; assists in maintaining tools and performing preventive maintenance on equipment.
Responds to public inquiries courteously; provides accurate information within the area of assignment; helps resolve complaints in a timely manner.
Assists in preparing reports and maintaining records of equipment and maintenance activities.
Participates in security and safety training drills for assigned personnel.
Acts as the Port Operations Coordinator in their absence.

QUALIFICATIONS

Assist in overseeing and coordinating port operations and activities.

Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
Operate power equipment and hand tools involved in port and harbors maintenance and repair.
Operate small boats.
Maintain records including time and material use records.
Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
