Dental hygienist performs complex dental work: cleaning, scaling, and polishing teeth, and conducting educational programs for the prevention and control of dental disease. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Essential Job FunctionsPart-time position . . . 2-1/2 days per week1. Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.2. Performs prophylaxis on individuals through scaling and polishing.Administers fluoride treatments.3. Alerts dentist to potential problems found during routine treatment of patients to facilitate appropriate treatment.4. Maintains clean, sanitary operatory equipment to ensure infection control, proper operation, and safety for patients and staff.5. Maintains records of services performed and submits reports on activities to maintain accurate dental records of patients treated.6. Provides dental health education for patients. Instructs patients on brushing, flossing, and encourages them to seek dental care to maintain good dental health.7. Operates dental x-ray equipment and develops and interprets x-rays to aid in treatment.8. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agencyand#146;s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or CertificationsMust be licensed as a dental hygienist by the State of Texas.Knowledge Skills Abilities1. Knowledge of dental disease prevention techniques, dental prophylaxis techniques and procedures, and public health dental programs.2. Skill in the use of dental tools and equipment.3. Ability to clean and care for human teeth; to instruct patients in the proper care of teeth and gums; to expose, develop, and mount x-rays; and to communicate effectively. Initial Screening Criteria1. Experience in dental hygienist work.2. Graduation from a recognized and accredited school or college of dentistry or dental hygiene approved by the State Board of Dental Examiners is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
